those
Dr. Mosa recently told mem bers of the Society of Automotive Engineers how he has gone' about, measuring comfort in motoring." Actually Dr. Moss has been measur- ing fatigue, since that is easier to measure than comfort. But that is only an indirect way of telling how comfortable an automobile might
be.
First Dr.- Moss established a standard of severe muscular fatigue with which he could compare the results obtained from motoring. For this he used a bicycle with the rear wheel propped up and con- nected to a measured machine. His subjects pedaled this bicycle for 15 minutes while the machine, or ergometer, measured the amount of energy they put into it.
After that they were put through various physiological and mental tests upon an average of which Dr. Moss was able to obtain a standard of comparison. Such tests included measurements of blood pressure, pulse, carbon dl- oxide combining power of the blood, blood sugar, hemoglobin blood counts, respiration and metabolism, rate of oxygen consumption, chest expansion. strength of grip and heart action. The same-tests were applied to the subjects after riding certain distances and over various types of roada.
vr
Measure Effects After Tiring.
Mental tests, to produce nerve fatigue, included continuous mentai multiplication for five hours, after which various reaction tests were. eppiled. For instance, the mental- ly tired subject would be asked to check off one number from a group of 100 to measure his accuracy or tap a telegraph key for measure- ment of his speed, or run a pencil along a narrow groove, without touching the 'edges, to show steadiness..
on
. Another important test was made with the "wabblemeter," a small platform on a ball and socket joint, which measured the subject's equilibrium before and after a spin the bicycle ergometer or a drive outside, The driver or rider would stand on this platform and any variation from perfect steadi- ness or balance would be measured by contact at the corners, by re- gistration on a revolving drum.
After an eight-hour drive, the wabblemeter showed an average in- crease in deviations from perfect balance of 232 per cent.
- Still Gathering Data. Besides these physical tests, Dr. Moss has prepared a standard questionnaire in which the mo- Loriet is asked to specify how he feels after a ride. All these an- swers Dr. Moss expects to corre- Jate with the other measurements he is making. preliminary to his further studies of comfort.
