FOR OUR LADY READERS.

"on't Say "Don't."

GOOD ADVICE TO MOTHERS

To be constantly saying to s child. "Don't do this; don't do that," is to be erecting a wall of opposition.

A high-spirited, vigorous child feels in the word "Don't"—a chal- lenge. He must reply to it by so called perversity in order to osta- blish his strength.

Not only this. An intelligent, logical child wants to know the reason for an arbitrary command. Blindly to accept all the "Don'ts" that are hurled at him induces a alavish, not conscious, obedience.

Of course, there are many oc- casions of emergency and a few of real naughtiness, when it is im- possible to say anything but "Don't." But once a child realises that such an order is only given when absolutely necessary, he will very soon learn to obey.

How many times a day do you "unnecessarily say "Don't" to your child? Of course, it is much less trouble than to give reasons. It is a habit that grows so easily.

Instead of a negative command, try a positive suggestion. Pro- pose some other occupation or in- terest. If possible, give the child a job of work, and let him feel that he is being of real use.

For instance, refrain from say- ing, "Johnnie, don't keep picking off the heads of the flowers." Say, "Johnnie, do hold my basket for me, it's getting so heavy.”

Not "Johnnie, don't tease the dog," but "Johnnie, do get the dog a bowl of fresh water he looks so thirsty."

Be constructive, nol destructive. By the time the child has carried our your suggestion he will pro- bably have forgotten what he was doing before. Hardly ever is he doing something which is wrong in itself. It is usually harmless, but happens to be inconvenient or aggravating to his elders.

It is difcult at first to restrain that hasty "Don't." But if it be possible to exchange it for a "Do" your patience will be well repaid. You will be saved from becoming a nagger (a dreadful fatel, and th child, instead of feeling constant- ly guilty and thwarted, will be reasonable and ready to do his share.
