COMMONS BAN ON VISITORS:

GALLERIES WOMEN MAY

NOT ENTER.

There are still galleries in the House of Commons which women visitors may not enter.

The matter was raised at the Council meeting of the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship in Londen, when the delegatos demanded access with out distinction of sex.

Miss Isobel Goddard referred particularly to the ban in respect of the Distinguished Strangers' Gallery and the Under Galleries.

We suffered a loss of prestige as a nation, she said by not honcuring at least the women members of foreign Parliaments, or women such as Madame Curio by admitting them to the Dis tinguished Strangora' Gallery.

It was, moreover, a serious handi- cap for M.P.s, who often employ ed

qualified women highly secretaries, or women experts in various professions, not to be able to see them in the Under Gal-

leries.

There was a large gathering of Sanitary Inspectors in the Board Room yesterday to witness the pre- sentation.

I trust that you all will carry on as long as I have and be in the same position--to go away fairly fit and be able to enjoy your pensions, as I hope to enjoy mine. Gentlemen, thank you very much.-(AP- plause).

Mr. Frith sald:-As you all know, Senior Inspector Duncan is retiring on a well-earned pension after completing 26 years and 9 the bar months' long and faithful service in honestly this Department. I can say that Mr. Duncan is one of the most conscientious officers in the

Government service. Whatever work he was asked to do he had done thoroughly. I have always found him willing to assist and I know he will be missed by some of the younger Inspectors in Kowloon. He has been my right-hand man for over two years and I am very sorry to lose him. I sincerely trust that both he and Mrs. Duncan will have good health and live long to enjoy their pension in the old country. Mr. Duncan, on behalf of the off- cers of this. Department, I ask you to accept this barometer as memento, with every good wish and good luck~~~(Applause).

In replying, Mr. Duncan said: I wish to thank you very much for this very useful instrument you I think it have presented me with.
