SERIOUS FRACAS PREVENTED IN YAUMATI
What might easily have developed into a fracas of sorious dimensions was averted by the timely arrival of a party of Police officers who were successful in preventing a gang of unruly bricklayers indulging a fight in Reclamation Street within a stone's throw of the Yaumati Felice Station and the Kowloon Magistracy.
..
Two of the men were arrested, one in possession of what the Police termed " fighting chain," while the other had been carrying two bamboo poles which were des cribed as being weapons fit for an unlawful purpose. On being brought botore Mr. Whyte Smith.at the Kowloon Magistracy on Satur day morning charges of unlawfully baving the articles in their posses sion for no illegal purpose werd brought against the men.
On noticing the charge against the first defendant, his Worship asked what a fighting chain was, and was told by Detective Inspector Fallon, who produced the article, that it was a weapon used by the Chinese, of old, as an instrument of attack. It consisted of B short chain with a handle at one end and a weight at the other. If properly manipulated the person with the chain could keep off 100 unarmed men. It WAA on old method of fighting.
His Worship intimated that he had never seen an instrument like it before, but had seen a man fight ing with a bunch of keys at the end
of a chain.
Detailing the events leading to the arrests of the two defendants, Detective Inspector Fallsh said that at 11 o'clock on Friday morning information was received by the Police at the Yaumati Station to the effect that a gang of bricklayers. had congregated in Reclamation Street. The men were alleged to be implicated in various Triad Societies and had staged a fight against members of other similar societies.
Ladies the Trouble,
A party of detectives was des patched to the scene and on ar rival found that over 150 men had gathered outside a teabouse at the Junction of Reclamation and Public Square Streats. Some of the men were armed with bamboo poles, while others were carrying chop- pers. The fight had not actually started and the man dispersed im mediately on the arrival of the Police.
*
The first defendant was seen car- rying the fighting chain, which was wrapped up is a piece of paper. He was acized by one of the detec- tives while the second defendant, who was armed with two bamboo poles, was not caught until after a long chase, during which he had discarded his weapons Ore of the detectives also found & chopper which had been thrown
away but the police had not seen who had the instrument originally.
"There was going to be a very serious fight," added Detective Inspector Fallon,
In reply to his Worship, the officer said that the origin of the trouble was over some prostitutes. One side was championing the ladica while the others were in op position and supporting the brickin-

Ladies and Gentlemen: It gives me great pleasure to come here to- day and distribute the prizes, especially when the recipients are young ladies. I have always taken a deep interest in woman- education Thirty odd years ago, when I returned to Hongkong from England very few schools for girls were in' existence. Since then

better. Parents have awakened to to say, the changes are for the the necessity of giving their daughters a liberal education. They are not satisfied with giving them only an education in their language but also in that in English. Girls, too, have shown aptitude for learning and a strong great desire for knowledge. Hence we four midst and, I feel sure, that many see so many schools for girls in more will come into being to meet increasing-demands. Thus women- education has made a great stride.
