A rubber bumper demonstrated in New York is said toʻ prevent damage to a molor car in a crash. It is the invention of Captain Franzcari Schleiff, shown in the picture, formerly of the German air force. It consists of a three-inch rubbor bar attached to two scissors-like arms fitted to the chassis. On meeting a flat object, the bumper acts as in figure 1 of the inset. Collision with an irregular object is shown in figure 2, and figure 3 shows a collision with a tree.

9-Choke control-may not close thoroughly when supposedly not in operation.

If, after all these points have! been checked up and corrected, the engine trouble persists, then the carburetor may be suspected. Possibly the only difficulty: here] may concern the proper adjust- ment. That's not so hard a job, but even this requires knowledge of the particular carburetor in use.

This can be ascertained from the instruction book furnished with the car. Besides telling how the carburetor is made, it gives instructions for adjustment.

Some carburetors have only one! point of adjustment, others have two and some have even three adjustments. It would not 'do to tamper with the parts of the carburetor until you know what each means and how it should be

adjusted. *

All carburetors, however, have an adjustment for idling speed. It is this, in most cases, that has to be readjusted in order to get the motor operating properly from idling to high speed. This is rather simple,

First retard the spark all the way and close the throttle com-

į

While doing this, open the throttle momentarily in order to clear the carburetor of accumu- lated gasoline, and so as not to choke up the engine entirely.
