HOW SHOULD SUNDAY BE OBSERVED?
REV. J. H. JOHNSTON SPEAKS ON THE PROBLEM.
The subject of Sunday. Obser vance has, for some considerable time past, been the cause of much thought and expression of opinion, and at the Union Church, Kow Toon, yesterday morning, the Rev. J. Horace Johnston made this the subject of his sermon.
The preacher opened by refer ring to a tennis tournament 100,00 10000 arranged by a local club to be held 100.00
on a Sunday, and, said that la 100.00 point of fact, there was a member. 100.00 of that congregation, who was helu 100.00 in the very highest respect, and 100.00
who was a playing member of the.. 100.00 club, who strongly opposed and 100.00 obstructed successfully the move- 100.00 ment for the tournament to be 10000 played on a Sunday. If they were 100.00 to discuss the steps to be taken; 100.00 they ought to be clear about the 100.00 whole position. Different opîalons,ɔky" 100.00 wera held regarding Sunday 100.00 observance, which, also, indicated 100.00 that the question was a very dif- Donations.ficult one indeed. It was not so
100.00
5.00 simple as some people inagined. 10.00 It was a very difficult question and 5.00 therefore more necessary to give 6.00 their attention to. It would be 25.00
very easy for the Church just to 5.00 lay down the law and say that. 5.00 this is right, and this is wrong," 5.00 5.00 and certain denominations had 5.00
adopted that method, and in doing 5.00 5.00 so, failed to solve the problem. 15.00
Different Conceptions.
5.02
God did not want us to be 25.00 slaves but to be his sons and. 5.00 daughters, who delighted in 20.00 pleasing their Heavenly Father. 10.00 The question then, before them, was one which he thought they came up against the moment they $12,150.02 entered this Colony. Many per- 5,148.00 sons, accustomed to the obser– vance of Sunday at Home, were $18,298.02 shocked on the boat as they journeyed out. And then when they The Society bas now 41 Life came up against others in the Members and 84 Annual Subscribers Colony, ther found and 30 donations have been made Christian believer with entirely to its funds.
different conceptions of their duty on Sunday. It was a question on which they ought to take a strong stand; but all they could do that morning would be to consider the problem. That was the first step towards the solution. .4

Mr. Johnston then went back to. the days of the early Church, when Jesus Christ gave them a spiritua! religion, and freed them from the old ceremonial ritual and abolish ed the Jewish sabbath: They experienced the joy of being 1 relieved from, those things and 13 felt that Christ had set them free. At the same time, he would: ask 117 them to note that the early Church, in the midst of its exuberance and joy of this emanicipation, worshipped God who had delivered them, and they worshipped God in Christian fel- lowship. And then they change their day of worship to the first. day of the week, because it was on that day that Christ rose triumphantly from the graver on. that day, seven days later ha appeared to the disciples, and it was on that day, seven weeks later, that he poured upon them Pente cost, the Holy Spirit of God.
