ECHO OF “IRENE" PIRACY.

NAVAL AWARDS FOR CAPTURE OF PIRATES.

SINKING RECALLED.

An echo of the Irene piracy, which occurred in October, 1927, is contained in an announcement by the local naval authorities that an award for the capture and destruc- tion of pirates by H. M. submarine L4 is now ready for distribution in the department of the Accountant, General of the Navy.

It will be recalled that the Irene was seized by pirates and taken to Bias Bay, where the vessel was signalled to by the L4 (in com- mand of Lieut.-Comdr. Hallahan) to stop. As she refused to do so, warning shots were fired, and, these being of no avail, the Irene was aubsequently sunk by the sub- marine's gunfire.

The L.4 and another submarine did splendid rescue work, and a cumber of pirates were captured and after due trial sentenced to death.

Subsequently, the owners of the Irene brought an action against Lieut.-Comdr. Hallahan for sinking of the ship, but this failed, on the ground that he was acting under Admiralty orders.

The award announcement states that the following amounts are due individuals of the various
