MRS. SOUTHORN DISTRIBUTES THE PRIZES.

A large gathering was present at the prize distribution in con- nexion with the Horticultural Society Show last evening when

exhibitors successful

-received their awards from the hands of

*

Mrs. Southorn.

H. E. the Officer Administering the Government (Hon. Mr. W. T. Southorn) was present, and both he and Mrs. Southorn were wel- comed by Mrs. R. M. Dyer (Pre- sident of the Horticultural Society), who, in a short intro- ductory speech, said that it was fifty years ago that the last flower, show was held in the City Hall. She thought they had every reason to be satisfied with the way the Hall had been decorated that day, despite the fact that the competi- tors had been through trying times with the weather, the flowers suf- fering from intense cold, rain and then heat. She had no fears for the future of the Horticultural

of flowers in Hongkong ag was evidenced that day. She reminded members that any time they wanted help or advice, it would be gladly given by the Secretary, who would also be pleased to help them in any gardening difficulties.

Mrs. Dyer made mention of the fact that included in the awards, was a souvenir prize, which took the form of an old English seal spoon of the 18th century.

She expressed thanks to all those

who had helped them with the show, and referred to the work of the Art Club, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Danby

and Mr. H. Green.

Concluding, she thanked His Excellency and Mrs. Southorn for their attendance,

After distributing the prizes to the successful competitors, Mrs. Southern said that the Horticul- tural Society could not have chosen a better or perhaps a worse day for their exhibition of flowers. Enter- ing the Hall out of the grayness and dampness of the streets, one could not help but be struck by the marvellous collection of flowers and vegetables on view.

She congratulated the Peak com- petitors on their success, saying that she always thought that any body who could grow anything at all on the Peak deserved the highest praise. Living as she did among the clouds, she appreciated their difficulties. At times, it was very difficult even to got out into the garden, not to say anything about growing flowers and vegetables.

Mrs. Southern congratulated the Horticultural Society warmly and wished them another 50 years of good luck and prosperity.

Cheers were given for Mrs. Southern, who, in turn, called for three cheers for Mrs. Dyer.
