SOMERSETS FOOTBALL
LEAGUE CONTEST..
The Inter-Company Football League of the Somersets has now reached the closing stages, the last-but-one match being played yesterday after:- noon at Soekunpoo. Each of the five companies in the Regiment plays others once in the League.
Before yesterday's game began, it depended upan whether "A" Company were do feated by "B" Company or not for the former to have a place.
very secure
By drawing with "B" Company, "A" Company now head the League Table. with five paints. "D" Com- pany have four points, and have to meet "A" Company in the last match. Should "A" Company draw or win the final game, they will retain their place, but a win for "D" Company will place them at the top with six points. Keen rivalry, and enthusias- tic support on the part of officess and men, nid to the excitement of these matches.
"B" Company ore the runners-
un in the Hongkong Area League, and
it
is surprising to find them not even runners-up in their own Company matches. Yesterday's teams were:
"A" Company
Lawrence,
Irish,
Trothatt
Jones; Kearle, Spurdle, Scott, Butcher
"Company.--Verrier; Huish,
Leyshon;
Seal, Hicks, Cotton
Palmer. Desend, Legge, Cornelius; Spurdle scored Arst for "A" Com- pany, tapping a centre from Butcher neatly out of Verrier's reach, when the Kame was fifteen minutes old. came back to the attack, and terced A Corner
from. Lawrence, though
a second corner from the flag- kek saw Seal send the ball wide of the peat. Cotton equalised for "B" Company from a centra by Denmead. Keen play, and good combination by Denmead and Palmer, saw "B" having the best of the rest of the Arst half. End-to-end play after ini terval saw play first in favour of one side and then the other, Excitement Krew towards the end, and hoth sides were a little too impetuous in the final minutes.
Navy Match.
A friendly game on the Dockyard ground yesterday afternoon, between the Tamar and the Wirelessmen, Stonecutters, ended in a win for the "Sparks" by the odd goal in three. They included in their team Pile, of Kowloon, and Gill, of the R.A. Teams: Taman Price; Brown, Robinson; Burnet, Sheridan, Sullivan; Butler. Carson, Bunker, Lake, Mumford.
Wirelessmen.Northcote;
Perry,
C. Pile; Jaques, Dorby, Campion; Young, Gill, Singer, Wilde, Giles.
The "Sparka" were soon bard- pressed by the Tamar, and the defence, was in difficulty until Mamford_sent wide of the post. Play was, of the end-to-end order, with the "Sparks". having a shade the batter of the game.
Singer netted the ball from a pass by Gill, but was ruled off-side; but 4 minute later, a pass to Gill from Giles resulted in a rocket shot to the top of the net to open the score. The Stonecutters side dominated the play for the remainder of the first hali.
Exchanges were fairly even on the resumption. An infringement near the goal enabled Butler to obtain the equaliser for Tamar, Attacks on both sides were cleared by the defences, until Dorby sent his wing away, and a pass to Gill gave the latter the chance to send in a fast ground shot that Price could not stop.
