Thornycroft 6-Wheelers Demonstrated.
SEEING HOW THEY'RE BUILT.
Following the impressive display of Thornycroft motor vehicles at' the Olympla Commercial Motor Show, John I. Thornycroft & Co., Limited, had the happy idea of In- viting a large party of Press re- presentatives and leading users of motor transport to make a tour of their Basingstoke Works, and see for themselves their highly efficient organisation for the production of their vehicles..
The party "travelled by special train on the Southern Railway and when joined at the Works by others who had gone by road, numbered about 150, and were then divided. taken into small parties and through the Works" by members of the staff, who explained to the vistors the many technical processes and novel types of machinery em- ployed in the production of Thorny. croft vehicles.
Following this a series of demon- strations was given, in one of the fields adjoining the Works, by several types of Thornycroft six- wheelers.
The ground had been specially prepared to resemble the roughest of colonial country with stretches of thick mud, flooded ground, deep pot-holes and obstacles in the shape f baulks of timber and steep 1 in 2 gradients.
The vehicles of the Company's latest 3- and 5-ton types gave a series of remarkable performances taking all these various obstacles in their stride without the least hesitation or difficulty.
The whole company of visitors were astonished at their per formances and agreed that these latest productions of Thornycrofts were capable of supplying efficient transport, in the most remote parts of the world where the absence of roads made any other form of mo- tor transport impracticable.
The guests were afterwards en- tertained to lunch, presided over by. Sir John E. Thornycroft, Managing Director, who in the course of his them to the speech welcoming Works, announced the most interest- ing fact that during the preceding year almost 60 per cent. of the Com- pany's productions had been export-
ed.

AMERICA'S TRANSPORT.
According to Official statistics, there were 92,400 motor-buses in the United States on January 1, 1929. Of these 42,000 are used for the transportation of school children; 35,300 are owned by independent companies for highway transport: 10,000 are-used by electric railways and similar utilities; 100 ate in in use by steam railways. The remainder are operated by sight- seeing companies, hotels, and the
like.
Hostility Cone.
The one-time hostility to the motor-bus on the part of the es- tablished railroad systems has in almost every case given way to a strong co-ordination between rail- roads and motor transport, with the result that to-day the total mileage of motor-bus routes exceeds the the total railroad mileage by 39,800 miles (289,473 bus miles as against 249,644 rail miles).
The railroads are increasingly us ing the motor-bus for the establish- ment of feeder lines, which open up where Tall undeveloped districts
service could not be carried on at a profit; and for the transfer of passengers from waiting rooms at the centre of large clties to railroad stations in the suburbs. Many rail: operators have established a motor- bus service parallel to and in 'com- petition with their own lines, as they find it an advantage to offer their passengers a choice between motor and rail service.

The future of the motor-bus in America'a transport system is very promising. There are still some 45,000 communities in the country without railroad service. Urban 'bus transport is also in- creasing rapidly, with the extend- ed growth of the cities, which creates a need for additional trans- port facilities.. Railways can ̈no longer limit themselves
-rail ser- vice alone, but must adapt the motor-bus and even the seroplane to their needs.
