CHINA AND SILVER.
MUST CONTINUE TO BE A
LARGE BUYER.
Shanghai, Feb. 17, Mr. Li Ming, chairman of the Bank of China, in the course of a statement, says the present low value of ailver is due entirely to the change to a gold exchange standard by Indo-China, combined with the indiscriminate selling of surplus supplies by the Indian! Treasury. *
The Shanghai stocks of silver are not too large, because the bulk constitutes reserves against tho banknotes in circulation;
Mr. Li Ming anticipates an in- creasing need for silver in China. A gold standard fi impossible in the near future and if and when it is introduced no gold coins ure Therefore, China contemplated. must continue to be a large, buyer of silver for coinage purposes.- Reuter.
