MRS. SOARES DESCRIBES FAMILY INCIDENTS.
Resuming her evidence before Mr. Whyte Smith, at the Kowloon Magistracy, yesterday afternoon, Mra. B., J. Soares, who is claiming maintenance against her husband, Mr. J. R. Boarës," gave details of several unpleasant Incidenta. *.

Mrs. Soares described a quarrel |which she had had with the dèfon- dant in the middle of December when, after heated argument, he grabbed her by the neck. She threw down the money, which he had previously given her for the house and he insisted that, sho should pick it up again but she refused. He then seized her and, forcing her to the ground, tried to make har retrieve the money. Sho still refused and the Bervant went to her assistance.
"Witness went on to refer to several occasions. whin she had been given insufficient food or had been given no food at all. There were times when no provision häd been made by the defendant, who, by this time, was running the house, for tifo or dinner. On Christmas Day she was given twenty cents for her dinner but, being insufficient she had gone to her mother's house. """"

On January 28 witness the defendant what he had decid- ed to do, as they, could not con. tinuo Hving in that way, but the husband merely replied, "I have nothing to decide. I want to sco how far you can go on."...
Family Quarrels."
Mr. d'Almada, în cross-examin- ing the witness, asked her if she had ever seen her own father and mother quarrel but his Worship interposed and asked the object of the question.

Mr. d'Almada mentioned he wanted to ask the witness if all. married couples did not have their arguments, but his Worship point- rd out that the question should be put in a general way without reference to the witness's parents.
His Worship asked witness if she knew that in the best of re gulated families there was usually a cortain amount of quarrelling. The witness showed some hesita- tion in replying to the question and his Worship laft the matter; remarking that it was common knowledge that that was the case. || In reply to Mr. d'Almada, the witness said that before she got married alte knew that she had to live with the defendant's mother and sister, but she had previously. mentioned to defendant that she did not think that she could get on with the sister,
