The latter trade exceeds 300,- 000 vehicles per annum, of which the British`automobile · industry supplies only some 33,000 velticles, The recommendations are:
(1) Retention of the present
MeKennn duties on motors, parte and tyres.

(2) In place of the present horse-power tax, as calculated, and present taxes on commercial vehicles, a tax of 10s: per 100 c.c. of cylinder capacity of the en- gines of cars, This is tantamount to n 33 1-3 per cent, reduction on the present hase-power tax. Commercial, motora and motor- cycles also to have a propor- tionate 1-3 reduction on present laxation rating..
(3) No alteration of the pre- sont petrol tax. This is consider- ed high enough. It is contended that if it were increased it would lesson the use of motor vehicles.
Effect of the Change."
This new system of taxation by the c.c. capacity of the cylinders of the engine would allow greater freedom of design In order better to compote against foreign manu- facturers in the export market, and would also enable British manufacturere to make models equally suitable for the home trade.
Under the proposed taxation senlo the registration or licence duties for a 2,000 e.c. car would be £10 per annum, in place of the present - average of $15 për an- hum, If calculated, as at present, simply on the area of the lore of the cylinder.
Other examples may be kiven: the 20 h.p. cylinder Austin. at 3,410 e.c. would pay £18 instead of the present £24 tax; the 20 h.p. 6-cylinder Armstrong Siddeley £14 10s, ipalend of £20, for ita 1-2,863 c.c. engine; the Morris Ista 6-cylinder 18 h.p. of 2,168 c.c. £12 10s, inatend of £18 and the Rolls Royce 40-45 h.p.,' taxed at present at £44, would pay for its 7,679 c.e. engine 33 10s. per annum.
British motor makers claim that the Government would gain from this system of taxation as the re- sult of a more general use of motor-cars.
The recommendations will be placed before Mr. Snowden by a députation,
