this winter. Rather, long lines point to smart.

Now that mid-winter it upon us, the new modes are, crystallized. The first spectacular and extrava- gant styles, those that were far more for display than practical wearing, have been modified. Styles are wearable, though new, by now.

Waistlines this winter take precedence over hip- lines. The princess silhouette has emerged quite the most popular one, though some empire styles arc excellent for the unusual woman. Skirt fullness is better low than high. Sleeves and neck treat- ments have extreme originality, with a premium upon those that carry a romantic note in their makeup..

There is more formality, especially in such things as the ure of long gloves for evening, and at least six-button length for afternoon things. Furn are.. lavish in their trim. Hans are elegant, though the off-the-face ones have proved not generally becom ing and hence many new things have been done with brims of a sort.

Length, both for formal afternoon things and for evening party apparel, is a matter of inequality. The all-round Apor length for skirts has not been voted into the wardrobes of many women. Mainly, be caure il carried such dignity with it that it implied nge. What woman today cases to give up one whit of her hard-won, cherished spirit of youth!

At the opening of, Stewart and Company, New York, a style show summed up costumes for various occasions that have received the stamp of approval from women of chic all over the country. They reflect modernism fem, the artistic as well as the fashion angle. They epitomize restrained modern- ium, and are ich, tegal and very leminine. Some of them are shown here,

THIS Sunday evening frock, suitable also for any formal daytime event, is of glamorous printed lame, in rich browns and gold. It follows the fitted silhouette, with a narrow belt of self- fabric marking the normal waistline. Soft, circular godets fitted into the skirt partion round up to a low hipline on both sides, dipping front and back in it. folds.

The collar is a cowl one, a happy cut for such ich, gleaming fabric. On one shoulder a sweet. bow of the fabric adds another feminine touch. The sleeves are, long and fitted with tied cuffs.

II. THIS hostess pajama suit takes the most

feminine of all colors, soft blue, in powder tone. It is transparent velvet, trimmed in becoming marabou of the same shade.

The trousers are rather conservative in cut, with A suggestion of the sailor flare at ankle length. They are fitted into a high waistline belt and a sweet lile eggshell satin blouse with a draped, neck tucks into them.

The three-quarters cost is shaped slightly form

fitting, held together in front at a high waistline with a rhinestone clamp. The maribou, infinitely softening in its flattering beauty, outlines the entire cant's neckline, front and curving backline. The sleeves have wide cuffs of marabou.

With this, powder-blue brocaded lame slippers are wom, with gold and silver trim and gold, and ailver heels.

The skirt is intricately cut, to give a fined hip- line with real grace sweeping it to fullness below. The skirt's hem dips in points, but so full is the bottom edge that where the points are long and where short is immaterial. The unevenness enhances the effect of grace and beauty.

wear of any kind, such as matinee parties." calls, matinees and card parties at one's club, there is this stunning green ensemble trimmed with Jap mink fur, lovely in its contrasting, golde and browns.

The frock, a one-piece model, is of crepe, fashi ioned on princess lines, with unusually lovely manip alation, introducing fullness in the skirt. The sleeves are very graceful, and the bodice has a sweet yoke effect with a velvet bow in front,

The cont follows the longer-in-the-back skin line, slightly dipping in the rear. It is decidedly princess. It is made of matching green kashmere, with lavish use of Jap mink in its trim. V SINCE pajamas have stepped up to the dinner table as hostess apparel and gone quite sportswear on the beach, many women are showing. a preference for negligees for lounging, in their own boudoirs.

This delectable French negligee is of peach col- ored satin, that luscious, becoming tint that heightens a woman's color and flatters her eyes.

It is utterly feminine in its cut, a semi-princess line, with Alencon lace fashioning a little hip-yoke for it. Alencon lace makes a wide border around its inyer rdge and dip out, from the neckline to suggest a drop yoke effect for the sleeves liat grow lavish in their width until they are veritable bell- shape at the wrist.

With this, shining gold mules add a charming
