ELECTION AGENT'S 240 CLAIM.

LIBERAL CANDIDATE. ORDERED TO PAY,

Loudon, Nov. 28.°

Mr. Albert - Edward Hill, can- vasser, of Colts-street, Limehouse, E, was awarded £40, and "costs in the Westminster County Court yesterday, against Mr. Jasper Joselyn John Addis, solicitor, of Charles-place, Oxford-circus. W.. The case was a sequel to the unsuccessful candidature of Mr. Addia as a Liberal at the last Gen- eral Election.

Mr. Elliott Gorst, for Mr. Hill, | said that it was a claim"for bal

ance of £50, the fee Mr. Addis agreed to pay.

Mr. Hill said that he was secratary of the Limehouse Liberal Association, and Mr. Addis up- pointed him as his election"agent and took part of his house for committee rooms. He did the whole of the work of election agent until two days before the election on May 30. When he pressed for the £40, Mr. Addis said: "I haven't got a brass farthing. You can get nothing from me. I am a solicitor."

In Parliament.

Mr. Addis-Did you say there were enough fools in Parliament without putting me thore?

Mr. Hill-No, certainly not. Did you call me a damn liar?—

Certainly not..."

A damo fool? No.

A-fool?-Certainly

not, I

often told you not to be a silly fool, but to stand on your dignity,

Judge Turner-You never dismis sed the mau. That is what is up against you.

Mr. Addis-But if he dismissed himself, that is also an end of it,

Judge Turner-But you have not alleged that,

Mr. Allen, political organiser to the London Liberal Federation anid that he spent 50 per cent. of his time in Limehouse during the election because of the unsatie- factory election agency work, Hill was a novice.

Judge Turner Is it the first time you have known a candidate not to pay t

Mr. Allen-It is the first time I have known, such a case as this.

Mr. Allen said that he saw that some of the posters had been. taken down from the windows on May 29.

Judge Turner Did you make any complaint about it?

Mr. Allen-No. Finally I offer- ad him £16 for four weeks' work as clerk,

Judge Turner said, that a week after polling day -Hill' signed „a receipt for £10 as election agent.

Mr. Addis said that Hill's work was woefully inefficient, and Judge Turner naked why Hill was по "aacked" at once. Mr. Addis re-

plied that this would have done harm to the Liberal cause.

Judge Turner, who said that he 'was satisfied that Hill did . the work to the best of his capacity, added that he had never heard such rubbish as had been advanced In defence.

Judge and Solicitor. Mr. Addis asked for stay of execution pending an appeal.

Judge Turner said that he would. not give one day's stay.

Mr. Addis-In spite of the fact that you had made up your mind before I gave evidence?

Judge Turner--I did not make up my mind before I had heard the evidence.

Mr. Addis-The comments you made about me were Insulting. You shid something about "even if you are a solicitor."

Judge Turner-As 'solicitor 3ou ought to know these things. That is what I pointed out to you. There was no insulting language.
