MUCH IMPROVED.

Important Improvements have been embodied in the 1930 Norton motor cycles, in line with the policy of Norton Motors (1926) Ltd., Birmingham, never to rest on laurels gained. Unapproachablo ns the machines have proved in the past, splendid as Norton_rac- ing and trial success, have been,' the efforts of 'Norton officials to improve their product have nover] ired.

The push rod operated 1930) models have all valve gear mech anism and push rols enclosed, giving complete protection against road dust, and also providing a better means of fubrication, thereby lengthening the life of these parts and securing silent operation.

The rocker box is provided with a detachable cover for inspection, the rocker shafts being mounted on phosphor bronze bushes. The Aller spout of the oil tank has received its share of attention and has been modified, greatly onhancing the ap- pearance. A feature of the 1930 Model No. 18, is the Improved arrangement of the cylinder head layout, which is provided with an off-act port. Many riders prefer gate-change gear" control and to meet these requirements, this becomes an optional feature on all models, fitted to the tank" and giving positive action."

A silencer of unique design, certified by the Automobile Asso- eintion as effelent, forms part of. the equipment on all models, special attention having been paid to avoid back pressure. All side-valve: models are fitted with easy delach- ble aluminium valve gear covers finished in similar style to thej crankcase. A development that every cyclist will appreciate is the introduction of Chromium plating. which is used on all 1930 models. The Norton organization has in- stalled in their plating department a new Chromium plating plant and experiments have resulted in a durable plating which is unaffected | by atmospheric conditions and will not rust whatever the weather con- ditions to which it may be exposed.

NASH CAR'S TRIP.

Seven Days to Hangchow.

---

TOUR DESCRIBED.

To a Nash car goes the credit of being the first automobile fo enter Hangchow overland from Shanghal. After one of the most gruelling tripa ever experienced by' any local motorist, Mr. Young, General Manager of the Union Motors, Fed. Inc., U.S.A., succeed- ed in accomplishing what many, of his friends thought was an im- possible fent

the

The total distance from Shang- al to Hangehow by using exist- ing roads and following the trail to Chelih, starting from Poolung side upposite Minghong, is approximately 130 miles, part of the rand being the son wall or dyke. Two stretches, ench 20 mites long, one starting from Minghong, and the other from Chapu, were the worst encountered. At the latter, it took the Nach party three days to negotiate six miles of sandy road. However, after seven trying days, the Nash party reached Hangchow on October 11, little thu worse for their trying experience, while the car was in excellent candi tion.

The party started out on the morning of October 3, full of en thusiasm and against the advice of friends, who stated that the journey was impossible owing to the existing road-or lack of road -conditions. The Nash car that! started off on the trip was a five- passenger Lourer, 1929 model, taken from the ordinar, stock of Union Motors, and was not fitted with any extra equipment, except- ing two heavy. Goodyear tyres, which, however were not needed, the tyres on the car holding up without a single puncture. The rough roads, if roads they can be called, made life miserable for the occupants of the car, Night travelling Was dangerous and sleeping accommodation of the poortst, but the members of the party made little complaint, if

any.

Credit, however, must be given the Cheklang authorities for the work they are now doing, on roade in their province, and within the next six months it is hoped that work on several of the roads now under construction will be com-: pleted.

CLEAN SPARK PLUGS.

It is far better to clean the spark plug porcelain with a rag wet with gasoline than to attempt scraping. Scraping is very apt to reduce the life of the plug, insofar as thes porcelain is concerned, although it is necessary to apply, this remedy to the points.
