LABOUR'S BURDENS.

HUGE DEFICIT ÎN NEW. BUDGET FORECAST.

London,, Dec. 14. Denouncing Labour's incronsing burdens on industry, the Rt. Hon. Mr. Stanley Baldwin, in a speech at Edinburgh, forecast a deficit in the budget of at least £20,000,000, most of which will have to be met by extra taxation.

Ho-warned. the Government especially as regards the un- employment Insurance and the Coal Mines Bills.-Router.

According to messages dated Saturday last, the Labour Govern- ment is facing possible 'defeat in the House of Commons on Tuesday whon both the Liberals and Con- servatives will move amendments to the Coal Mines Bill. In this event a political crisis might be caused. but there is a possibility that the Government will win Liberal support by making changes in connexion with the marketing scheme, wholeheartedly condemn ed by the Liberals. At the moment there is little likelihood of the two Opposition partics tom- bining to oust the Government.

Among the large crowd present at the function was Lady Ho Tung, who was met at the entrance by Miss Sawyer and the Bishop of Victoria, while a group of Girl Guides formed a Guard of Honour for the distinguished visitor. *

All the stalls looked very pretty and contained work done by the children themselves, who have throughout shown a great spirit and enthusiasm. The proceeds of the sale will be partly devoted to local charities and partly to the improvement of the school,

Miss Sawyer said that structural alterations estimated at a cost of about $10,000 were imperative if the school was to accommodate its present number of pupils and make the progress it should.

Wreckage Washed Ashore.

London, Dec. 14. "Wreckage was wished ashore night with the name Tormentor at Manorbier, Pembrokeshire, last thereon," is the laconic announce- at Lloyds, the length of whose casualty lists recently is eloquent evidence of the havoc caused by the December galea.

Games played an important part in the life of the school, continued Miss Sawyer. Both the existing tennis courts needed remaking and

net ball court was lacking.

Part one of the Coal Mines Bill deals with the marketing scheme Part Two contains the proposal for reduced hours, to which the coal owners object. It is proposed that the eight hours' day, allowed by the Act passed by the Conservative Government in 1926, should be re- duced to seven and half hours on April 6th. Part Three of the Bill authorises the Board of Trade to set up a National Industrial Board to investigate any dispute as to the terme of the colliery workers.
