Prompt measures are being taken to repair the trans-Atlantic cables broken or otherwise damaged by the
earthunke.
There are about twenty cables between Britain and North America, and about half of these were affected. Communication has been maintained without serious de lay, by alternative cable routes and wireless, and some of the cable com- panies' repair ships arrived yester- day in the area of damage, situa- ed about three hundred miles off the Nova Scotian coast,
This is stated to be the first time in history that Atlantic cables have suffered through an earthquake.
The White Star liner Olympic, on reaching, New York yesterday, reported that she felt the shock when 312 miles off Cape Race. The ship shuddered, but no damage was done, British Wireless and Renter's American Service,
RUBBER SELLING
SCHEMES.
LONDON CRITICAL OF THE
LATEST REPORT.
A TEDIOUS PROCESS?
London, Nov. 21. London rubber people are far from enthusiastic regarding the report of the Rubber Growers' Committee." They
generally describe the plan outlined as un- practical, and express the opinion that in any event, the carrying out of the recommendations must be a very tedious job...
.. It would seem, Judging by the comments, that while it is unlike- ly that any active opposition will be ventured to the scheme, it will be hindered by lack of interest.
It is argued that no individual will enter a group as suggested, unless he sees material personal advantage.
One authority is of the opinion that both British and Dutch pro ducers have been frightened by the growth of native production.
The Committee's scheme given fully yesterday, aims at reducing the number of sellers by approxi mately 90 per cent. It feels that a central selling organisation for the whole industry is impractic- able, but suggests that the 'pro- ducers combine themselves into groups of a size equivalent to an outout of 4,000 tons per annum.
London's criticism is rather unexpected.-Reuter..

When a summons, In which a driver was charged with failing to signal when turning a corner, was mentioned, a Chinese appeared be- fore his Worship and intimated that the defendant was absent from the Colony but that he would pay the man's he provided it was only a few dollars.
His Worship intimated that the usual fine for the offence was $5 and accordingly imposed, the penalty mentioned.
The driver of a lorry was charged with speeding in Waterloo Road, it being alleged that he travelled at a speed in excess of fifteen miles an hour.
The defendant pleaded guilty.
His Worship asked for the facts of the case, but it was stated that Sub-Inspector MeWalter was the complainant.

Remarking that all he could do was to dismiss the summons, his Worship discharged the driver of a lorry who was charged with driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the road at the Star Ferry Fier, by, failing to keep to the left.
An Indian constable said the de- fendant had driven his lorry past the Railway Station and was so close to the ferry pler that he col- lided with one of the pillars.
In reply to his Worship, the con- stable said the defendant should have kept more to the right hand side.
His Worship pointed out that the man was charged with falling to drive on the left hand side of the road, while the constable himself admitted that he had driven on the extreme left,
His Worship said he could not see that the defendant was driving ou the wrong side, and dismissed the summons.

A special Budget statement was mude Parliament by Mr. Theodore, the Federal Treasurer, outlining the steps which the Government had decided to take,
to
He said that there was no time to recast the proposals made by the Government's predecessors in uffice, but in order to fill the gan of £2,000,000 which was contained therein, he proposed to obtain additional revenue by certain in- creases in the customs and axelse dutles and by the imposition of a super-tax varying from ten per cent. on incomes of over £200 to twenty per cent, on incomes over 20,000 per annum.
The Government, he added, was convinced of the necessity of con- trolling the credit resources_by Institutions. The national Government was, therefore, con- templating the re-modelling and Increasing the scope of the func tions of the Commonwealth Bank,
Later, It is learned that the increased customs duties proposed by Mr. Theodore will affect textiles, in- cluding woollen piece-goods, hats und stockings, and also metal manufactures and cigars,-Reuter.
