FAMILY DISPUTE.
MAN WORTH A QUARTER: OF A MILLION.
Stated to have assets to the valus of over three Inkhs of dollars, yield- inga monthly income of aver $1,000, a Chinesa contractor, named Lai Tin-fook was summoned 'be fore Mr. W. Schofleld at the Kow- loan Magistracy yesterday after noon by his wife, Yau Fung-kiu; who claimed maintenance.
́Mr. F. C. E. Rendall äppeared for the, complainant and Mr. J. M. Remedios represented the defen dant.
In opening, Mr. Rendall gald that it appeared to be a very sad ease and one of the kind of which fortunately very few were brought before his Worship. The couple were married 26 years ago and there were seven children;-four boys and three girls. One of the boys and' one of the girls were married, while the other fiva, were under the age of twelve.
For scine years, continued Mr. Rendall, the complainant said that the defendant had treated her bad- y, more especially since he took his Jas concubine. According to his instructions, the defendant had four concubines, the last being cruel not only to the complainant but also to the children. The complainant would say that the mind of the husband seemed, to change and Kis treatment gradually became worse. Several times he had struck her and pushed her while two years ago he frightened her with a pistol. Whether it was loaded or not, Mr., Rendall said he could not say, but the defendant had pointed it at his wife and said that he would shoot) her. Things went on in that way for the past five years. Although they lived in the same house they did not live together as man and wife,
Sometime last year, the defen dant wished to marry his eldest daughter to the son of a man who was stated to be rich. The girl, however, was in love with a man, who had gone to Shanghai to join the Customs. His family resided in Hongkong. The mother favoured the marriage of the girl to the man in Shanghai and early this year or at the end of last year she took the daughter to Shanghai for the wedding.
$20,000 Dowry for Daughter.
The defendant intimated that if the daughter were taken away to Shanghai then he would take no further notice of her. He had pro- mised her a dowry of $20,000, if she married the man he had wanted her to marry, but if she should marry the man of her own. choice he would cut her off altogether,
The complainant was absent in Shanghai for six months and when she returned she went to her house where the eldest son was also liv ing. The defendant turned her out And refused to allow her to go in. He struck her and pushed her away. The eldest son intervened and he was also struck and turned out of the house. The infant chir dren were still living with the de-
fendant.
Two or three days after being turned out the complainant went to Mr. Rendall for advice and was taken to see the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, who also sent for the defendant. The matter was discussed, but the husband refused the offer to take the wife back, or to provide her with maintenance. As a result of that proceedings were instituted'in Court.
Continuing, Mr. Rendall said that he was told the defendarit was now fairly prosperous but at one time he was very poor, or rather, he had no money and the wife had helped him. At the time of their marriage he was unemployed and the wife had a little money which she lent. him, assisting him to attain his present position.
