INTERESTING DISCOVERY NEAR VIENNA,
Vienna, Oct. 16. Some time ago, a pre-historic flint mine was discovered in the Wienerwald hills, near the village of Mauer, douth-west of Vienna. The mine contains a sort of horn- stone, and geologists say it is unique in Europe.
Professor Bayer, the director of the Museum of Natural History, now states that he has discovered! relics of a town connected with the mine, dating back to the stone- age. The neolithic people who worked the mine had a highly developed technical culture, mak- ing tools and many domestic articles out of flint. They made excellent use of the mine, which was obviously worked by them for several venturies. A flourishing export trade was built up, and Mauer became a centre of a pre- historic culture. Professor Bayer declares that the skeletons found may be about 5,000 years old.
