CONCERT BROADCAST FROM GOVERNMENT STATION,

THE LEGION FUND.

The Government Broadcasting. Station transmitted one of their most successful and enjoyable pro- grammes since their inception from Z.B.W, on Saturday evening. when it took the form of a special Poppy Day concert.

The relay at the Broadcasting' Studio, came through with excop- tional clarity, both the vocal and instrumental music, and the speech of the Hon. Mr. W. E. 'L Shenton, being completely free of any sort of interruption.

The programme, too, was well arranged, musical tastes of all des eriptions being catered for," and those responsible have every cause to be satisfied with the success of the entertainment provided.

The string Band of H.M.S. Ber- wick, conducted by Mr. G, J. Maul- kia, came through extremely well with their selections of "Tipper- aryland" (Stoddon), "H.M.S. Pina fore"

(Sullivan) ́ ́ánd "Merrie England" (German), the balance. and general tone of the instru- mentalists being particularly good.

Mrs. Richard Sanger sang that old favourite "Danny Boy," withi pleasing expression and effect and later a beautiful interpretation of "Roses of Ficardy," whilst Mr. A. E. Stone's singing of "Shipmates O' Mine" and "Requiem" (Homer), was one of the big.euccesses of the evening.

Equally enjoyable was the con- tralto voice of Mrs. Vivian Hei- more, whose sympathetic render- ing of W. H. Squires beautiful score "My Prayer" and "There's a Land" (Allftson) made pèrfect re- ception.

An especially good relay was obtained of Mr. Dick Barty and his piano, the most attractive of his numbers being "The Tune that caught on." Mr. Robert Suther- land contributed 2 humorous Scotch song, and here again, the reception was distinctly good, even in an ante-chamber, where the acoustic properties are as bad as they could possibly be.

Other artistes contributing were Mrs. Scott Little, who gave inter- pretations of "Lament," Opus.148 (Villers-Stanford) and "Scherzo Merziale" (Villiers Stanford), Mr. George Grimble (accompanist) and Mr. John Braga (violin obligatos).

Poppy Day Appeal.

Midway through the programmie, the Hon. Mr. W. E. L. Shenton broadcast a short speech on "Poppy Day." His voice obvious- ly suited the microphone. for every word came over clearly, requiring no strain on the listener to hear what he was speaking about!

In his speech Mr. Shenton made
