H.E. THE GOVERNOR'S INTERESTING STUDY."
At the first meeting of the Eng- lsh Association, held yesterday at 5.30 pan. in the Cathedral Hail, a large and representative audiènce assembled to hear the opening lec- turg by His Excelleney the Gov- ernor, on "The Story of the Word Tea." After the minutes of the Constituent Meeting of the As- sociation had been read and ap. proved, His Excellency rose to address the Society,
In selecting his theme, he said.
he had endeavoured to find, first
a point of contact between the English and the Chinese lang- unges, and secondly a subject that would be of particular interest to the Colony of Hongkong. Tea had constituted 60% 62: the exporta of early Chinese trade with Europe;
tea-chests there were
on the Colony's badge; the very word was Chinese, not English, though Pope's references to "elemental tea" and to the "nymphs" who dis- pensed "Bohea" do not reflect the fact that both word and beverage were imported. Of the word, oven Inguistic scholars have not finally solved the origin.
Former Names.
There was no such word ny tek in English till the seventeenth century; none in Chinese till the. first century A.D. In 1651 "chaw" was the English word, "chu" the Portuguese. "chai" Russian, whil the Italians used both "tay" and "sha." Why does Pope in 1712 write of "Bohen?" Where was the original home of the tea plant? There has been much controversy but a Professor of Kharkov Uni- versity, after years of research, announced in his book "On the Tea-Producing Districts of Asia" that the tea plant is indigenous to the monscon regions of Eust Asia; and that from the earliest times there have been two varieties, that of China and that of Assam. Yet
It is only two thousand years ago that the Chinese first knew of tea, and the tea of Assum was unknow till the nineteenth century.
His Excellency proceeded to give a detailed scientific explanation of the monsoons (which were first mentioned by an English writer in 1684 as "times of seasons of winds called monsons") and of their effect on Asia, which. Is par- ticularly felt on the China coast from Canton to. Shanghai, and in Assam, which swept by the 'sum- mer monsoons over the Bay of Bengel these are the world's twe great tea-producing regions,
