SPLENDID BATTING BY LAL SINGH
AND BOSTOCK-HILL.
WILSON'S FOUR VICTIMS.
The triangular interport tournament opened this morning on the H.K.C.C. ground, Malaya and Shanghai engaging in a keen struggle for the upper-hand on a pitch not entirely
favourable to the batsmen.
Malaya took first knock and at the close of the morning had compiled 111 runs for the loss of five wickets, runs coming at an abnormally slow rate at the beginning, but speeding up later.
Malaya started disastrously, losing three wickets, all bowled by "Torry" Wilson, for 24 runs, but a splendid partner- ship between Lal Singh and Bostock-Hill put on 70 runs for the fourth wicket and retrieved a serious situation.
Features of the play' were the brilliant fielding of the Shanghai team, the most effective bowling of Wilson, and a masterly innings by Lal Singh, who made 48 out of 89 in bright style, hitting at practically everything once he had got his cyc

NEW PROJECTS.
MR. THOMAS TELLS OF "THREE MONTHS' HARD LABOUR.”
CANADIAN COAL ORDERS.
Asking the House of Commons to accept it as the first indication of "three months" hard labour,” Mr. J. H. Thomas made a lengthy statement in Parliament yesterday on the Government measures for dealing with the unemployment "problem.
Mention was made of expenditure sanctioned on industrial improvement schemes, roads, and Colonial Development total- ling £42,000,000, whilst other projects involving many more millions were under review.
Dealing with his visit to Canada, Mr. Thomas announced that 600,000 tons of British hard coal would he sent thither this year, and the difficulty next year would be to meet the demand. He was even more optimistic regarding steel
Referring to difficulties in acquiring land for roads, Mr. Thomas foreshadowed early legislation to tax land values and unearned Increment.
In the subsequent debate, Mr. Lloyd George described Mr. Thomas' proposals as "timid, pusillanimous and unintelligent, but the vote on Mr. Thomas' salary, on which the debate was initiated, was agreed to without a division."
