TUG HAWSERS BROKEN.

One of the great flying-boats employed by the British Imperial Airways on the Croydon-Karachi air mail service has met with terrible disaster, sinking in the Gulf of Genoa during a furious gale, all aboard having lost their lives. There were seven people on the ill-fated machine, three members of the crew, and four passengers. The bodies of the pilot, Captain L. S. Birt, and of one of the passengers, have been picked up but after a long search through a stormy night no trace has 'been found of the machine or the other victims:

ני

The tragedy is rendered more poignant by the news that her S.0.S. message was picked up by a steamer which reached the "City of Rome," threw out a tow rope and pulled the machine through the storm for ninety minutes. The hawsers snapped in heavy seas, however, and the steamer went for assistance. No trace was found when the master returned on a destroyer.

Long searches availed nothing and there can be no doubt that the disaster is complete. Information is scanty, and there is no indication of the reason why no attempt was apparently made to rescue the crew and passengers when the Italian steamer came upon the doomed craft.
