THE SHINING TALENT.

CHAPTER XXIV,
The following story, typical of many, appeared that afternoon on the front page of a New York evening paper.

Later Mr. Fowler lucidly and thoroughly explained some of the many features of this particular type of machine.
Machine Described.
metal body Hermes Avian is the develop ment of the well known type which has been in use for the last 3 or 4 years. Many Improvements have been added to the machine, amongst them, being, the stainless steel con- struction of the fuselage. This allows for far better streamline, strength, and length of life.
He said that the new
Whenever a strength restorative is needed, bo it by man or woman, there is nothing surpassing Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, the blood and nerve building' tonic with a world-wide reputation extending over forty years. Your chemist can supply them at $1.50 per bottle, $8 for six bottles.
Hermes is air-cooled and it will doubtless be as a surprise to many that the designers have been able to produce a complete cowling covering the whole of the engine. Thanks to this cowling, a very of ficient streamlining can be obtain. ed for the whole of the machine' which is not usually possible for air-cooled engines, especially of the radial type.
ba
A further interesting point ts that the undercarriage can changed into either & land or sea- plane, and the floats, which are of a new and entirely British make, can be both fitted to, or taken off, the machine at any time. In ad- dition, both sets of wings can be unfastened and swung back to the body, which enables it to be housed

The engine is fitted with four The tall unit has been greatly cylinders developing a maximum of improved by the inclusion of the 115 h.p, and a speed of 105 to 115. tail adjusting gear. This enables.p.h. There is no axle, which the machine to be flown hands off on level keel no matter what weights are being carried. This improvement is a great assistance when making long flights, as it does away with the necessity of the pilot holding the control column zo keep the machine level,
fn the old type Avian, the ailerons were of the standard de- sign, but in this new machine, balanced ailerons have been fitted, which makes the lateral control. ex tremely effective and very light, and actually gives Interal control after the machine bas stalled.
The other controls, that, is the rudder and elevator, are also most effective and even at the slowest speed, control is easily maintained. It will be appreciated from this that this machine is extremely safe to Xy, usin the event of an error being made by the pilot, he can im- Imediately correct It.
The undercarriage consists of stainless steel tubes with rubber rings in compression to absorb the shock of landing. The under carriage is of the split axle type, which enables either wheel to move without the other being affected, therefore, if this machine lands in rough ground, the undercarriage takes up the various shocks and an accident is avoided,

naturally prevents bouncing and bumping on rough ground, and the machine also possesses that great asset of rubber under-compression. The engine is fireproof, but a point of even greater importance is that its minimum factor of safety is six. These are some of the chief features of the plane, and it is in teresting know that the Far- East Aviation Company, who are hoping shortly to inaugurate n local Flying Club, intend to use two of these machines for the club, The project has already had the full Governor of the approval of the Colony, and he has in fact taken extraordinary amount practical interest in it. The last Hongkong Budget allowed for a subsidy for the club, and the pro- jectors have now only to await the formal approval of the Secretary of State before going right ahead.

In addition to providing local en- thusfasts with instructive recrea tion, the promoters have as their ultimate aim the idea of forming. n commercial air route in the Far East, and as there should be no lack of support by the public in this Colony, there seems no apparent reason why this object should not be speedily fulfilled.
There

the
organisation will be lacking, for schemes are already on hand for the eplargement and improvement of the aerodrome, and although it may be a little premature to fore- cast a date, It is quite possible that the club will be under way with in a month's time.
