HANKOW INCIDENT.
Hankow, Sept. 30.
On Saturday afternoon Mr.. L S. Tong, compradore of the local branch of the Chartered Bank, was made to sign under duress at the Detective Bureau of the Garri- son Headquarters a promissory note for $20,000 payable in Oct. Both he and his son, Mr. T. C Tong, were given the alternative of signing the note, or remaining in detention until auch time as he decided to do so.
It was at about 9.30 Saturday morning that a squad of armed soldiers went to Mr. Tong's residence at the corner. of Co- operation Road and Liangyl Street, S-A.D. 2, under the pretext that the compradore and his two sons, T.C. and B.C. Tong, were request- ad to go with them to Garrison Headquarters to talk over a cer- tain scheme. On their refusal they were threatened and Mr. Tong decided to go along with one of his sons On arrival they were confronted with particulars of a certain deposit made by Gen. Chen Tiao-yuan, the present Governor of Shantung, through his agent, Mr. Ohlang, some time in 1926.

Being desirous of placing $20,000 in silver in some bank he instructed his agent to approach Mr. Ha Chi-shan, compradore of the Banque Belge Pour l'Etranger here. The latter consented and placed the sum in the Kwang Dah Native Bank, which was run by the late Mr. B. T. Liu, who was then compradore of Molchanoff and the National City Bank.

ANGLICAN CHURCH DERIDED.
London, Sept. 15.. Father Dudley, addressing the Roman Catholic Congress, which is being held to celebrate the cen- tenary of Roman Catholic emanei- pation, declared that the prospecta of a corporate return to the Roman Catholic faith were very alight, but that individual conversions ought to Increase.
"The Church of England," he said, "fast becomes a force. Disestablishment must inevitably come, and then the Church of England will be a 'sect amongst other sects perhaps, an insect."?" Father Dudley went on to criti- cisé modernism as Roman Catho- licism's greatest enemy. He dea- cribed Dean Inge, of St. Paul's, and Bishop Banes, of Birmingham, as very ignorant men, Ignorant of the first things, which, as profes they ought to sing Christians, know, namely, theology and Chris tian religion.
