RICKSHA INCIDENT.
EUROPEAN'S BEHAVIOUR
CRITICISED.
The behaviour of the ricksha pallers in Hongkong was highly praised by Mr.T. S, Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy yester day afternoon when his Worship convicted Mr. T. Gibbison of a charge of causing unlawful and malicious, damage to the cushion cover and side screens of a ricksha during the early morning of August
27.
The case was adjourned from Tuesday for Sub-Inspector Cotton) to be called to give evidence on de- half of the defendant, who said that the officer examined the ricksha and found the vehicle, in duding the cushion cover and side screens, intact.
Sub-Inspector Cotton stated that he did not notice whether the cushion cover was torn, but saw that it was wet. There was a tear In the side acrcens which were so badly damaged that they would have to be replaced by new ones The coolle did not, stated witness, complain of having been kicked by the defendant.
Defendant's Denial.
On the defendant intimating that he had nothing further to say than that he denied the charges his Worship addressing Mr. Gibbison,. sald that he found the case proved. There were two charges, one of as- sault and the other of causing malicious damage. With regard to the former count the coolie stated that he had been kicked, but there was no corroboration of that and his Worship was inclined to allow
that charge to drop. He would hold that it had been proved con- clusively that malicious damage bad been done to the cover of the seat or to the screens or to both.

MASONIC SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF SIR PAUL

They hre law-abiding and goodnatured, (I) practically never have any of them before me for any dishonest offence. They come before me for small trivial traffic offences, but taken as a class I think they are a very fine set of fellows and they should be treated as such."
On the retirement of the late Sir Paul Chater, Kt., C.M.G., from the office of District Grand Master of Hongkong and China, an office Continuing, his Worship said that he had held for more than 30. sometime ago à Major in an in-years, various Masonic Lodges and fantry regiment said to Bim that Chapters in the District contribu he would like nothing better than ted funds for the foundation of to train a battalion of ricksha a Scholarship at the University of coolies as soldier, and his Worship Hongkong, to be awarded to the thought that a very high compil fatherless children of Freemasons. ment from a professional soldier.
