Fathers will pour out amount of money to fit their girls for the professions, but few parents seam to think of taking their girls in with them and giving. their daughters, the responsibili ties and status of full co-partner- ship in the family business. This is a pity alike for father and daughter, for, after due considera- tion, few would be found fool hardy enough to advance the opinion that, if given équal oppor tunity, girls would not do as well] in business as their brothers,
Of the professions, probably more girls are trained for teach ing than for any other. The pro- fession of teaching is, however, notoriously overcrowded, In the legal, and medical professions, opportunity for women, though

A Passion for
Fitness
Those who have thought much about the causes of poverty know that something more than a redistribution of wealth would be required in order to banish poverty from the land.
Colonel S. Leleau, Professor in Public Health at Edinburgh University, said to a lecture to the British Social Hygiene School re- cently that we need a positive passion for fitness," and that "one generation healthily bred and brought up would probably result in such a saving on hospitals, doctors, and medicines as to pay the cost of aweeping our unhealthy alume away."

Woman has already done auf. ter place and pull her weight in ficient to prove her fitness to take the business world. Examples of woman's natural aptitude for com- 'merce abound; in spite of the Lew opportunities presented. The highest-paid woman in America, Mrs. Blanche. Green, only entered business 15 to 20 years ago by accident. She began at the bot tom as a canvasser for a corset company. To-day she is national organiser to the same company. with an income round about $20,000 a year. This is not the only instance of women entering business by chance and then achieving remarkable success.
Even in the home itself, is not. the wife's ability to manage her household affairs efficiently, and to see to the welfare and training of her children, proof of woman's fitness for commerce? The
management of a home, with all. the detall of the multitudinous duties entailed, is a business that might well confuse many captains of industry. B. In Exchange.
Autumn Velours.
There are all kinds of attractive velour hát novelties in store. It' is said that a new hat is a care for, most feminine woes, 80 per haps this attractive millinery will be some sort of compensation for the departure of summer. All the new velours show a self pat- tern, obtained by shearing the bile in various ways. One effect obtained is that of Persian lamb more attractive still, since. It is lighter, is moíre velour, which shows the characteristic water wave lines. In some styles the marking is of a lighter tone than the background, and in other examples the order is reversed and the wavy lines are darker.
Sheared basket patterns are also much in evidence, the pattern being. formed by the unshorn
