M. BLERIOT ON" HIS "ISLANDS."

"HOLIDAY RESORTS” IN ATLANTIC OCEAN:

Faris, Aug. 18. M. Louis Bleriot in an inter- view in the Paris Midi elaborates his scheme for a trans- atlantic aeroplane service.

M. Bleriot's idea is that a single stage flight, or even one made with a stop at the Azorea, Is out of the question, and that the only means of securing any degree of anfety is the establish- ment of a chain of floating islands between America and Europe, where aeroplanes can land for refuelling or repairs.

The islands would be spaced at intervals of 300 miles, and pro- vided with all the necessities of a modern aerodrome as well as hotels. M. Bleriot suggests that they might be developed kind of seaside, resort which would have a special attraction for Americans in being free from liquor laws.

as

The constitution and govern- ment of the islands would be regulated by international statute. M. Bleriot realises, o course, that the acroplanes would not necessarily land on each island, the size of the "hops" being determined by their own qualities and circumstances.

PRINCESS SHOT IN HER CAR.

MURDER ATTEMPT ON ARCHDUCHESS.

Praguo, Aug. 6.

An unsuccessful attempt to murder Princess Elisabeth · Win- dischgraetz, granddaughter of the late Emperor Franz Joseph, is re- ported from Lälbach (Ljubilans, in Jugoslavia),^

It is stated that when the Princess was returning to her castle at Littai, near Laibach; a shot was. fired at her motor-car.

The windows were smashed, Bod) the Princess was slightly injured about the fuce.

Archduchess

The Hapsburg Elisabeth, who is the daughter of the late unhappy Crown Prince Rudolph and the Belgian Princess Stephanic, has led an amazing life.

When the Princess met and fell in love with Prince Windischgraatz. in 1901, the Emperor Joseph insisted that they should neither meet for write each other for a year.

The condition was kept and the Royal couple married, despite, the. Emperor's belief that it was a mesalliance.

Soon remarkable stories of love intrigues were afnot, and later, the Prince asked for a divorce, alleging that his wife's affection had turned to hatred.

After a trial lasting four years, the Prince won his suit and was given custody of the two children.

At Schoenau Castle there were lively scenes when an attempt was made to force the mother to give up the children.

Detailed Plans. Detailed plans for these float- ing air ports are already in existence, but not having found

Twenty genarmes with fixed sufficient support in France M. Bleriet has had to look for back-bayonets went to the castle, but ing in America. He has found a fight seemed imminent, when the the estate workers protested and a collaborator in an American engineer called Armstrong, from the putting into execution of the mayor obtained the postponement of whose design a floating island of court's order. the kind envisaged by Bleriot is being constructed and will short ly be completed.

M. Bloriot is now occupied, and has been occupied for some time, with designing a type of aero- plane suitable for his scheme, The ideal machine, in his opinion, is a large land 'plane driven by four motors and capable of carry- ing a big load of passengers and mail. In the case of coming down on the sea between two islands the wings and motors automatical- ly detach themselves from the body, which is like a lifeboat and is made to float in any weather. This is considered a bettor safe- guard aganst the risk of ♫ forced deacent than the use of hydroplanes, which" are easily sunk by waves.

M. Bleriot is convinced that the future of aviations is in the aeroplane and not the dirigible though he admits that the two British airships destined

for the air line between England and India may show themselves more practical than "the Graf Zeppelin, in buing easier to handle.

U.S. MECHANISED ARMY TRIALS,

AUTOMATIC RIFLE PLATOON FOR MANEUVRES,

The United States Army will, during the present training season, conduct experiments with an in- fantry formation built up on much the same lines as the two Brigades of the British Army, one of which belongs to the 2nd Division gt Aldershot and the other to the 3rd Division on Salisbury, Plain.

In both armies the desire is to produce the maximum striking power and sustained effort with out losing mobility. No perma nent changes in the organisation of the United States Army are con templated until after the experi ments, which are intended to give.. a practical test to the progressive studies made by the various schools of thought on the proper organisation of an efficient com. bat divlaloh.

The Morning Post Washington Correspondent states that two general types of organisation for experiment have been decided upon. In both types the Infantry of the division will comprise two brigades of two regiments. The regiments will be composed of thrée battalions, while the howlt- zer company will be eliminated and its three platoons distributed among the battalions.

In the first type to be tested, the battalion will comprise four rifle companies and one machine-gun company, the howitzer platoon being incorporated in the head- quarters company of the battalion. In the second type tested, the bat lalion will have two rifle and two machine-gun companies with the howitzer platoon in the battalion headquarters company,

The rifle company will comprise foun platoons, tentatively, three platoons being magazine rifle pla- toons of six squads each and the fourth platoon an automatic rifle platoon of 24 automatic rifles, organised into six aquada. The machine-gun company, will com prise four platoons, three platoons Armed with, four calibre 30 ma chine-guns sach and the fourth platoon armed with four calibro 50 machine-guns.

She once wrote of her husband: "The class of aristocrat who is ridiculed both by the stage and the Press; in short, a weak-minded morally undeveloped, cowardly fop.”
