Water-Cooled Types.
The water-cooled engines pro- duce by Rolls-Royce Ltd. have! and wɛh | been brought to a very high state of ethelenes and the latest types, known as the "" and "" engines, represent the very lust wart in development.
The "" engines were designed with the object of produeing power unit of very low frontal area and light weight for bigh performance aircraft. This has ven successfully accomplished and the "" series, which have passed all type tests, can claim to have the smallest frontal area of any gine of their power now in production,
The H type is an enlarged edition of the "F" and is almost identical in construction and ap pearance. Its normal output is 826 h.. compared with the 480- h.p. of the "P" type. Both are, of coarse, of the 12-cylinder Vee type.

For Use With Heavy Oil l'ucl. A particularly interesting gine, in view of the great attention now focussed
the Diesel principle, is the Sunbeam-Contalen Compression Jynition engine. Among the advantages of this type are economy in fuel cost, safety, s the heavy oil employed is al most non-inflammable, and re- liability. Magnetos, uparking plugs and carburetters are dis- pensed with entirely.
The succers of the compression Ignition engine depends very large- ly upon the effeicucy of the fuct valve. In the Sunbeam engine a mechanically operated valve is used with most exact timing and This permits high engine speeds to be attained with equal division of work among the six-cylinders. It has a capacity of 8,822 cc. and develops 100 h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m.
To Aselit Navigation, One of the most difficult pro- blems in aerial navigation is to determine altitude accurately and this is, obviously, a matter extreme importance particularly when cruising at night, flying in mist or landing in foggy weather,
