Who Was Socrates?

Beige & Brown.

The Founder of Christianity was not the first to suffer death At the hands of his own, people because of his doctrines. Four hundrod years previously the Greek philosopher, Socrates, wus condemned by the Athenian popu- Ince to die by drinking hemlock.

The charges brought against him were that he had. Introduced new gods and corrupted the morals of the youth of Athons. These charges were a complete misinter- pretation of the philosopher's In- tention, for Socrates had steud- fasily sought to awaken his fellow-citizens to the dangers of ignorance, which to him was the real cause af vice. "Virtue in knowledge; vice is ignorance," he maintained.

His method of teaching his dis- ciples was to put to them a series of questions, which led them, stop by step, to discover the truth for hemselves. This system has been adopted by many teachers, and is now called the "Socratie" method.

Socrates wrote no books, and what we know of his doctrines and philosophy is derived from the works of his friends, chief among whom was the great Plato.

Summer Days.

SUNSHINE AND BEAUTY.

may

We all delight in summer days, says a writer In a Home paper. |but, nevertheless, the sun

prove a dire enemy to beauty.

Take the hair, for instance. Sunshine is certainly les best toule, but too much of it not only bleaches the colour, but dries up the natural oil, making the hair try and brittle. This can, how- ever, be prevented by giving the hair frequent oil baths. The best time is about twelve hours before shampooing, and either olive or almond oil may be used. It should he rubbed well into the scalp with the finger tips, and even after the shampo, a little more may be applied. It will not, If carefully applied, give the hair a greasy appearance, but simply a pleasing and protective gloss.

It must also be remembered that the hair collects consider- |ably more dust during the sunimer months so that extra washing is necessary, not so much of the hufr as of the brushes. Two or more should be in constant use so that one may be washed out every day,

Skins vary very much so does the effect of the sun upon them, When the skin is tender and of fine texture, naturally the sun and the salt water when bathing are going to have drastic effects. The only thing to do is to apply sort of protective before exposing the akin 10 them. Before sen bathing glycerine diluted with an equal quantity of water should be putled, gently into all the exposed surfaces. This is an excellent preparation to use for the delicate skins of children.

When not bathing it is a good plan to massage into the

arms and, face a few drops of almond | oil. i Wipe off any surplus with a soft cloth and use a liquid powder. This is far more effective a pro-i tection against, sunburn than the dry variety.

The eyes require even more at- tention if the sun and the dust are not going to ravage them of their colour and sparkle. Fro- quent baths of

warm boracle solution are the finest treatment.' The best protection of afl, of courao, is a shady hat. As these are fashionable this year, none of us need suffer from faded eyes and unbecoming wrinkles.

OUR NEW BRITISH CROSSWORDS, ⠀⠀

Tablecloths are getting more and more decorative. Embroidery in many forms is seen on the new designé, some of the most attrnc- tive of which carry out the pat- terns of the more famous, chinu designs. The willow pattern is javailable, na "Well as Wedgwood and Crown Derby. A friendship afternoon teacloth is a happy pùa- 'session that any Woman average cleverness with her em- broidery needle cun contrive for herself. The cloth should be mude in pastel-shaded unfadable Irish Inen, and the hems decorated with simple drawn-thread work. A second line of drawn threads should make a border around the cloth, so that the space between it and the hem is about ten inches. In this space ask your special friends to sign their names with indelible pencil, after which work it over in a simple stitch. Such a cloth becomes a treasured posses- sion, and provides a 'record when time has occasioned separation | 10 Breached, and good-byen.
