JUNK OWNERSHIP DISFIGUREMENT OF

PROBLEM.

CRAFT ORDERED TO BE RELEASED BY COURT.

LICENCE STILL HELD.

Under an order made by the Pulsne Judge in the Summary Court this morning, junk, seized for debt, is to be released by the Court, but the licence for it is to be retained in the eastoly

of the Court.

The junk hus figured promin eubly in actions heard during this year in the Summary Court. It was sought, in the original action, to decide the ownership of the craft, but oven after to-day's pro- coedings the ownership remains in doubt and the junk is now freed.

The matter arose out of three claims against a man called Chau Ho un promissory note Judg

was given for the three plaintiffs and after the junk had been seized, an application for its sale wits made. When

ment

the

ense was last before the Court in July, the Pulane Judge intimated that it would have to be establish ed that the junk was the property of the debtor.

Witness's Claim.

Mr. J. M. D'Almada Remedios to-day tendered evidence of, this, enlling a canvasser of the top Wo Arm, 246, Hollywood Rond who stated that Chau Ho was the owner of the junk, which was ased by his firm to transport. cargo to China.

Witness produred various books which his Lordship ruled out as inadmissable, saying that Chau Ho might have signed any num- her of documents and yet not be the owner of the jutth.

The witness further stated that Chau. He told him that he owned the junk.

The manager of another firm of freight brokers was also called and said he knew Chau Ho. He knew him to he the master of the junk, but witness said he could not discriminate between owner and master.

Insuflleient Evidence.

His Lordship still held that the the junk could not he sold an ovidence of ownership which had been tendered.

MEMORIAL.

·CHINESE CHARACTERS ON A KOWLOON MONUMENT.

WHAT VISITORS SAW.

During the recent visit to the port of the French flagship Waldeck Roseno, a detachment of sailors, under the command of Flag Lieutenant De Bryns, visited and pinced a wreath on the memorial erected near the Diocesan Girls School in Kowloon to the memory of the French seamen who lost their lives when the destroyer Fronde" sank in the dianstrous typhoon of 1906,

Now that the Waldeck Rosseau

has left Hongkong, attention may be drawn to EL circumstance which must have left a very poor impression, 011 our French visitors regarding the Colony's care of its monuments. We refer to the fact that on the marble tablet of the memorial which bears an inscription in. French, a number of Chinese characters have been printöd la black paint, enusing a most objectionable dis-

gurement of the

memorial.

What the precise import of the printed characters is,, we cannot say, but, whatever it may be, no credit attaches to the authorities for permitting the disfigurement on the to remain. Incidentally, wall of the Diocesan School opposite. the memorial, there are also a sumber of other Chinese characters, similarly painted..

We suggest that the least that! the Goverment can do is to give this Kowloon memorial a thorough clean-up, and, more particularly, to remove the Chinese characters It will be recalled that some few years ago, British and American

ailers, disgusted with the dirty condition of The Wanchai, mom- ment, themselves undertook the task of cleaning it, adding a wreath of tribute to those in whose honour the memorial was erected, when they had completed their self-imposed task. It would have been rather humiliating had the French sailors on Sunday morning done likewise at memorial.
