SCOTTISH DEVOTION TO THE DUCHESS.

Rain at a garden party has usually a dovastating effect upon the spirits of the guests, but it was acon clear recently at the garden party given by the Lord High Com missioner and the Duchess of York at Holyroodhouse, that the rain did not matter at all, because but tho mattered nothing Duchean!

True the sartorial glories special- ly prepared for the occasion were veiled by wraps and mackintoshes, but it de doubtful if, in any case, they would have been appreciated as on former occasiona bbcause there was but one thought, ono desire to see the Duchess-in the minds of those composing the apparently endless queue, as it wound its way, slawly upstairs and through the picturo-gallery and the state rooms, to the Throno- room, where the Royal host and hostess stood to receive their guests.

The Duchess wore a graceful wrap of belge mirror velvet, lined with cloth of silver and with a collar of fox fur in a deeper shade. Her dress was of the same shade of Halin beaute, and her hat of noft belge straw, and a narrow band of a deeper abado around the crown and a brush feather at the side. Several rows of most beau- tiful pearls lent gleaming beauty to her pellte, figuro as she bowed of hor and smiled to, each one guests as they Med past.

Downstairs and along the clola- ter-like sides of the quadrangle, and out again into the garden, the procession wended its way. By this time the rain had almost censed and the guests began to move toward one of the great marquées whore tea and ices were being nerved.
