PROMISSORY NOTE.
HOTEL MANAGER'S DEFENCE ACCEPTED,
Major C. Willson at the Central Police Court yesterday afternoon acquitted Wong Ho-chuen. AN Resistant manager of the Empress Hotel, on a charge of obtaining a promissory note, from named L Cheung, under false pretences.
2 man
Evidence was adduced by the prosecution to the effect that the defendant recovered the nole (for $4,000) upon payment of ten per cent of the amount owing.
་
The case was brought into
Court when the defendant claimed that the paymont was made upon the understanding that it was to be in full settlement of the debt. This was denied by the owner of the note, who said that the $400 which he received was only in partial settlement.
After a lengthy hearing spread- ing over many weeks, during which a copy of the promissory note was produced in evidence, Major Willson yesterday Bold there had been a conflict of evid ence, but that he believed that the defendant's story was the more consistent of the two, and lis- charged him.
Mr. D. L. Strellott appeared for the prosecution and Mr. M. K. Lo for the defence,

1-The idea of letter golf is to change one word to another and do it in par, a alven number of strokes. Thus to change COW to HEN, in three strokes, COW, HOW, HEW, HEN.
2-You can change only one letter at a time.
3.You must have a complete word, of common usage, for each jump. Slang words and abbrevia. tions don't count.
4.The order of letters cannot be changed.

CABLED OFFER OF WATER FROM SAN FRANCISCO,,
Memories of the beautiful drink ing water supplied on board the President ships, obtained, we under- stand, from Seattle, are conjured up by an enterprising business offer ninde to a Hongkong firm yesterday.
News of the Hongkong water shortage hos apparently been cabled to different parts of the world, as yesterday a local concern was astonished to receive from San Francisco a cable offering to supply water in five gallon jara at G$1.90 per jar. They have evidently received a distressing ac- count of the Colony's hardships!
While up one will want the Gov- ernment to import water at that price, the offer conveys a hint. Those who can afford it might do worse than bay drinking water from some of the liners which visit Hongkong.
