After four persons had pleaded guilty in the British Police Court at Shanghal to a chargo of "haunting" 152C Bubbling Well Iload, commonly known' as "The Wheel," and a fifth defendant hnd entered a plea of not guilty, Mr. | G. II. Wright informed the Court that the persons before the Court Jud had not been specially singled out from the 200 whose names had been taken on the night of the raid, and that all of those who clone within the jurisdletion of the British Court would be eventually called upon to answer the same charge. Owing to the absence of counsel for one of the defendants, Mr. A. J. Martin, Police Magis trate, adjourned the hearing.
The five persons who appeared In answer to summonses were J. S. Graham, senior clerical assistant of the Public Health Department; J. H. Binkélock, 2nd Assistant Com- missioner Public Health; R. J. S. Davies, sub-accountant of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China; W. Sutherland and H. 0. Pickford of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. A sixth name was mentioned in Court but owing to the summons not hav ing been served the charge against him had to be held over.
The small courtroom was crowd- ed as the time approached for the hoaring of the charges, quite a number of prominent local re-. sidents being numbered amonget those interested in the proceedings as well as a number of smartly attired Indies. The case for the prosecution was in the hands of Mr. G. H. Wright whilst Captain R. M. J. Martin, Acting-Commis- sjoner of Police was present.

Mr. Martin: The reason I ask- ed was purely on account of the Issibility that there may be some considerable legal argument and this may affect the others.

Mr. Wright concurred in this possibility.
Addressing the other four de- fendunts Mr. Martin said: "I pre sume that in pleading guilty, you gentlemen merely admit that you were on the premises 7"
One of the defendants smilingly. admitted that such was the case.
Mr. Wright: "When they sald they were guilty I took it to mean that they were merely on the pre- mises. There are no allegations | of gambling. There is, of course, the possibility that other things may crop up. The police may have something to say.
