So far as newspaper accounts were concerned, however, there was one big disappointment Gladya Payne, Bland's erstwhile secretary and fiancee, chattered not at all for publication, and it was largely on Miss Payne's testimony that the in- dictment had been secured, if gu mour was to be trusted,

The day after the bank cashler's story appeared in the paper Craw ford admitted to Morgan that, so far as his desk calendar showed, he had had no engagement between half-past two and three o'clock on Wednesday, November 9.

"But of course that doesn't mean I was necessarily in my office," Crawford · pointed out. "Good Lord! How can I remember what I was doing that particular half- hour? There was nothing to fix it in my mind, as there would have been if Wolfe had actually talked to me on the phone."

Nan was present at the confer- once, "Your switchboard opera- tor niwaya asks who's calling, doesn't she? Perhaps she will re- member whether you were in or not. She would call your private office

Morgan shook his head gloomily. "Brainerd will already have got hold, of her. But we may as well ask her to come over. Were you and she good friendo, Bert?"

Within 10 days the grand jury had met and returned indict ments against Herbert S. Crawford

Mr. D. Gow explained the finan- cial position, pointing out that the estimated cost of the buildings, in- cluding furnishing, was $91,300: He understood that Sir Paul Chater's estate would bring them in $130,000 this year, so that left a balance in hand of $38,700. After dealing with other detalls, Mr. Gow said that they needed an endowment fund of $50,000 after all expenses had been paid, and in order to gain this amount the sum of $10,000 was required.

Mr. J. L. McPherson explained what aid could be received from the Three-quarter Century Fund, saying it was formed for the pur- pose of bearing the expense of leave for the minister. The sum of $18,000 was raised and it now amounted to $40,000 It available to both Hongkong and Kowloon on their merits.
