She becaine stranded on these rocks and despite the efforts of two turs, refused to budge.

Dr. J. H. Montgomery, who suc- ecoded Dr. Sanders in the hon. treasurership of the Auxiliary, delivered an interesting address on "The Bible in the World." Ho spoke of the great scope of the work of the Society, which had developed from an fden originated at a meeting, held in 1802, of the Religious Tract Society of Lon- don. Starting out with only one thousand copies, the circulation of the Bible was fostered and extend- ed to Wales, then to Scotland and to Ireland, where its introduction in the vernacular was especiallyed on the rocks.:

welcomed.

A natural step forward was the extension of the circulation over- the spenker gavo n aens, and fascinating insight into the work of the Society when he quoted figures of sales which running into millions, had been largely brought about by the conversion of the word of the Bible into almost every tongue or dialect that was known do mankind. In this con- nexion he paid, a tribute to the splendid work of the translators, who had surmounted every lin- guistic difficulty and reduced to popular form the contents of the Gospels without deparlingt from the faithful interpretation of their spirit.

...

The dissemination of the word of the Bible was effected by the Society in every soll, it flourished in every clime, but what was for more important, the soil in which it was transplanted was the human heart...

The circulation of the Bible under the auspicies of the Society had amounted to 1,219,000 coples in the case of China, its need in the Chinese home being fully ap that an increasing demand should come from non-Christians.
