Mr. Veir had been in China just 35 years, being 51 years of age when he died. In his early days he was a follower of the sea and experienced life in the old mailing ships and had a knowledge of the old conditions in many of the Chins porte. He left the sea to become one of the Hongkong police force, in which he rose to the rank of ser geant, before realgning and going to Shanghai, where ho found a posi tion in the Maritime Customs. From the Customs he joined the Waterworks.

Later reports of the casualties on the N.Y.K. upper river steamer Bairyo Maru, which was bombard- ed with guns and rifle fire a few miles below Ichang, whilst on her maiden voyave to Chungking, state that Sub-Lieut. Toyoda and one Chinese were killed, the Chlef En- gineer died of wounds and six or Ave Japanese seven, including Marines, were wounded.--Renter. Vigorous Protest Likely.
