HIGH SPEEDS!

Question:-After about 3,000 | nifles service, the number two con- necting-rod of my enging burned out its bearing and this occurred again after approximate- ly another 3,000 miles, although on both occasions there was plenty of oil on hand. Furthermore, during this period, pistons have twice stuck in their cylinders." The engine manufacturer advises drbp- ping the crankshaft and checking up the oil passages to this con- necting rod, but this would be quite a job. What do you sug- gest? Also this engine has a peculiar vibratlon at high speeds. What causes it?

Answer:We can only reiterate the advice of the manufacturer, it being evident that the ofl feed to this rod la obstructed and the sooner the trouble is removed the sooner you will obtain permanent satisfaction. When you have the engine "down" not only see that Jall of passages are clear through- out their length but check up the eloarances at all connecting-rod bearings with the recommended amount. You will probably find. that No. 2 piston was the one which acized, on account of no oil eplash from its rod-bearing and perhaps ita cylinder is acored a little. If so, it may be weaker than the others and be concerned in the vibration which' you com- plain of.

One Spark-Plug Fouls,

Question:-I have always had trouble with the fouling of No. 1 apark-plug in the engine of my

Bix car. Although I have had a new block, new cylinder head and new rings, with springa behind the fouling still persists. How can this bo overcome?,

Answer:Assuming that No. 1 plston and rings actually fit well enough, so that this is not an Jordinary case of oll-pumping, it [may possibly be that the clearance at the connecting-rod bearing of this cylinder is greater than re- commended, thus permitting an excess of oll to be discharged on the walls of this cylinder. You better have this clearance checked up and adjusted, if it is found too great. You are not using an all pressure greater than recommend- ed are you? Possibly temporary rellef might be obtained by filting an oil controlling ring, in the lower groove of No. 1 piston, if such is not already provided. We assume that the fouling is due to oil and not to an overrich mixture in this cylinder, but unless you are using full Intake hent, and [reasonably légn mixture, you may be getting trouble from the latter CAUNC.
