LOOTING AND PILFERING ON

THE YANGTSZE.

The menace of pirates attacking a disabled vessel is amply portrayed in the following accounts of a vessel's experiences after striking a rock in the Upper Yangtze.

The Chinese str, Pingfu struck a pinnacle rock near Sanchu in the Kunglinglan rapids, situated about 33

last and it was impossible to dis- lodge the vessel.

The Custom River Inspector de- cided that anlvage of the vessel was an impossibility and sho must be blown up ne who was a menace to navigation. At the water level ob- taining at the time of the accident it was possible to pass through the rapid with a 50 feet clearance,, bat when the water rises she would be right in the steamer track. Demoll- Lion was accordingly commenced and Information is now to hand that tho vessel has been completely destroyed,

The Vessel Abandoned.

At the time of the accident, the master, Capt. Pagani, an Italian nubject, ordered the vesnel to bo abandoned As soon as it became ob vious that the position was extremely dangerous. As soon as the crew left the ill-fated steamer, the usual crowd of pirate-bandits assembled and com- menced looting, continuing their work until

after darkness sot in, and then set her on fire. Capt. Pagani, who had been taken on board the Atr. Ting Yuen, reported the mailer ut 1 a.m. on the morning of February ∙18 and a radiogram was despatched from U.S.S. Palos at Ichang to U.S.S. Tutulla, outling the situation. An- other vessel also reported that this

It appears, however, that certain earga was subsequently salved and Bome 600 bales of cotton yarn were saved but the actual quantity of cargo looted and removed from the vessel but presumably the Customs have by the pirates in at present unknown a good idea as to what quantity of cargo was in the ship at the time when she was destroyed and, if no, this will enable a fair estimate to be formed.
