Sugar Depression.
The decrease in the demand for sugar from the interior of China and a continuous decrease in prices conacquent to the unpreced- ented crops in Java, are factors responsible for losses sustained by the "Chinese engur firms in Hongkong last year. In 1928 Hongkong sugar merchants saw the price of Java sugar at its lowest margin for ten years.

The demand In Hongkong for Bentwood'oll came principally from the West River districts, and for peá- nut oil, from Dairen, Newchwang and Kwangtung. Trade showed a decrease in 1928 and this, coupled with the high prices de- manded by the oil producers, had sharp effects on the Chinese oll firms.
