DANGERS OF CHANCE.

Unfortunately minor faults in driving do not always lead to minor accidents, writes a corres- pondent to a home paper. Most of the really big and serious ac- cidents are probably caused by some tiny crror of judgment, or some little discourtesy, for which the driver would be thoroughly ashamed after a few months' reflection.

It is easy enough to lay down driving rules which will encourage Bafety: most of the major rules that are continually being dinned into the ears of motorists have undoubtedly saved lives, and mach aroney to the insurance companies.

Driving a car under modern road conditions is far too complicated a matter to be covered by a few general rules, however, and it is often the little things that make all the difference between disaster and a clean sheet.

It must be owned that to a cor- tain extent the law encourages stupidity, but then the law can never be expected to keep pace with progress, and though In years to come we may have legis- lation that would fit driving con- ditions to-day, by that time it is probable that entirely new circum- stances will have arisen.

Not So Simple.

Stick to the main principles and rules of the road by all means, but do remember that these cover only a comparatively small number of cases and that driving a car re- quiries a good deal more than blindly following a few principles; One of the best examples of this type of driving is usually made by the man who comes over cross- roads anyhow and at any speed, and after he has extricated himself from the wreckage says, "Well, 1 blew my horn." I had the pleas sure once of being present in Court when a law ease over dam. ages was in progress. The "neci- dent took place al erona-ronds In Croydon. One of the parties con- fessed that he blew his horn 100 yards before he came to the cor ner. He might have blown it in Brighton for all the good it could have done.

In all those matters a certain amount of common sense is neces- sary. It is no use blowing your horn where no normal car can hear it, and it is far bettor to avoid an accident altogether than to have one, oven though you are certain that you are in the right.

A Wrong Attitude.

There is a type of person who always imagines when he sees an- other vehicle crossing. his path that he has the right of way, and that the other driver has no busi- ness to be there at all. This at- titude usually leads to trouble in the long run.

One of the most common forms of disregard for the convenience of other drivers has been brough to a fine art by the London taxicab driver. It is that of continually changing from one line of traffic to another, whether pulling to the "off" or to the near" side. Many accidents are caused by these tac- tics, in which the vehicle that is the actual cause of the accident is never involved,

Another dangerous habit is that of many drivers. When

coming into a road from a side turning across the stream of traffle they will exercise the ordinary amount of caution, but when turning the same way as the general traffic stream, sweep out without even looking to see what is coming up from their right-hand side. This is frequently the cause of serious accidents.

Another method which often leads to trouble is reckless start- ing from rest. No motorist who has pulled up beside the road should start again and pull out without first ascertaining that the way is clear not only in front of his car but also behind it.

Anyone who starts suddenly and begins to pull out from the kerb in front of an oncoming vehicle is likely to get the latter into trouble. It is not enough to hold out a hand and then to start, re- gardles of what is behind,

-work, work, work-day in and day out. No petting, no pampering, just work. And like dogs, they are expected to render the same faithful service.

We had this fact in mind when we built your car. It would have to run on roads that were not, to cross every kind of country, to climb anything but trees; in all weathers, to take a good deal of rough with precious little smooth. We built the bigger, high-powered Morris-Cowley-a glutton for work with its wonderful power unit, its 56 in. wheel track, high clearance and splendid workmanship. All round the world, this fine car can be used and relied upon. MORRIS AFTER-SALES SERVICE IS WORLD-FAMED AND PRICES OF SPARE PARTS ARE FIXED BY THE FACTORY
