Elephant Illumination.

CEYLON'S LIGHTING

PROBLEM.

In Ceylon the traille problem is the elephant.

He is the 10-ton track, the trac- tor, jaywalker, and road-hog all in.one, and he meanders, in large numbers, at h low idling speed along the 112 miles of motor road between Colombo nad Kandy, to the grave annoyance of motorists, who prefer to travel a little fuster than elephant pace.

In daylight he can be observe at some distance, but after sunset his protective colouring makes him Inconspicuous. Now, there Is a little controversy as to how. The he should be illuminated. municipal council favours a white light in frost and a red one at the rear, and motorists agree. Non- motorists consider a white light on the neck would be sufficient, while the 'owners of the elephants -a somewhat conservative people --dialike disfiguring their pela with any kind of radiance.

World-wide interest was created when Major H. O. D. Segrave announced his inten- tion of endeavouring to create a new world's record for speed on land and sea.. At the time of going to press with this Supplement, news has been received that this daring Bri- tish motorist succeeded in reaching the tremendous average speed of 281.36246 miles per hour at Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. on March 11th. His performance with the motor boat "Miss England" will be awaited with much interest. As this world's oldest and largest speciallets in lubrication, the Vacuum Oil Company points to one forward sign after another which has given motorists better lubrication.

In the eary years of the automobile we were first to specify a correct oil to meet the lubricating .needs of cach individual car.

In recent years wo were first to provide an added lubricdling margin of safety against to-day's high speed, high compression, high temperature operating conditions.
