WHY HOTEL COMPANY ENTERED TRANSPORT FIELD.
HAD NO ALTERNATIVE.
A non-controversial reply to recent criticisms of the Hong- kong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd., for inaugurating a motor-bus service on the Queen's Road route, was made by Mr. J. Scott Harston when presiding at the Company's annual meeting held to-day. It will be recalled that at the recent meeting of the Hongkong Tramways, Ltd., the Hotel Company was accused of competition in this connexion.
Mr. Scott Harsion's statement was in the nature of an ex- planation of the inception and growth of the Company's bus and car services. He dwelt with the opening of the Repulse Bay Hotel and the motor rond round the island, necessitating trans- port facilities between the city and the south side of the island, and stated that although local firms were approached and offered subsidies for loss on working over a reasonable period, no sup port was forthcoming. This compelled the Hotel Company to inaugurate its own bus and car services.
It was also explained that the Company made several ap- pleations to the Government to run buacs from Kennedy Town to Happy Valley via Queen's Road, two in 1923 and one in 1925, before the concession was granted in 1927.
