IS INDO-CHINA A FRENCH
* POSSESSION?
The case against Chan Hong- chun, the Haiphong Chinese whose extradition la applied for on a charge of committing an offence against the bankruptcy laws of Indo-China, was continued before Mr. D. W. Hamilton at the Central Magistracy yesterdný.
For the prisoner, Mr. F. II. Loacby, in his final address, com menced by criticising the extra ordinary delay to, which the pro- ceedings had been subjected owing to the change-over from one charge to another by the authori- ties who were asking for the ex- tradition of the fugitlye.
The fugitive, continued Mr. Lostby, had been kept in custody since December Inst, as one ad- journmant was made after • ́an- other, and all that while i had this charge hanging over his hebd, Much time had been wasted over the oane, and Mr. Loseby said that his instructions
now wore
to shorten these proceedings no much as possible by refraining from arguing many points which had been brought up from time to time in the course of the proceed-
inga.

CORRESPONDENCE.
EXPENSIVE. "BRANDY."
[To The Editor of Hongkong Telegraph.1
Str. A few days ago lady was accosted by a pedlar who had for sale two bottles of Hennessey's Three Star Brandy at $2.00 each. The price was tempting enough and with a view to offeeting economy the purchase was made. Next day a bottle was opened and it was found to contain tea, the colour of which closely resembles that of brandy. On close compari. son with a bottle of genuine Hen- nessey everything seemed identical with the exception that the dud
bottle bore:
1. No Government Excisa Label, «. 2. A Nock label which appears
to have been forged: 8. A ad cap cover slightly
thinner than the original. It was ascertained yesterday that quite a few people had al- cady been deceived by this artful heat.
It is hoped that the unwary will now be on their guard and perhaps be the means of bringing this trickster to justics.—Yours, etc., G. G.

Shanghai, Mar. 19. Disregarding the proclamation
One point, however, which the Crown appeared to have overlook- ed as a preliminary matter of essential in.portance, was how far the proceedings could come within the jurisdiction of the Court, seeing that the Extradition Treaty under which the return of the fugitive to Haiphong was be-recently issued by the authorities ing sought. was between France warning the public against the and England, and not one between risk of serious accident in the Indo-China and England.
