Hain Wah was said to have been but eight years old but, according to a statement made by the legal adviser of the company, the vessel was driven on to the rocks by a strong wind and storm. We find that she was not in a seaworthy condition because, at the time the vessel was sailing into Hong- kong, three British vessels, the Hal- ning, Soochow and Hosen, and a Japanese ship, the Kuantang Maru, dot far from the Hain Wah. Why did the Hsin Wah alone strike the rocks and none of the other vessela? A fishing boat was near by when the Hisin Wah struck the rock. This little vessel, instead of being driven on the rocka by the wind and storm. where they will bo examined on the days after arrival of ateamor, other-

"Regarding the last point, the Hain Wah kank in a little more than an hour after she struck the rock, ac- carding to the Hongkong authoritles. During this long period, only one lifeboat was lowered. The Hongkong authorities record also the fact that the crew rofused to take passengers on board the lifeboats! Furthermore, the vessel wna noi fitted with wireless apparatus.
"From these investigations, we will. enally see that the authorities of the China Merchants 8. N. Co. · were actually responsible for the tragical sinking of the Hsin Wah and for the distressing loss of life."
