THE HELENA MAY MUSICALE.

ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME. LAST NIGHT,

Two of Hongkong's best-known and most talented musical en- thusiasts, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Bowes-Smith, provided the pro- gramme for the musicale hold at the Helonn May, Institute last evening. They presented a really delightful offering of vocal and instrumental numbers, in which they had the valued assistance of Mrs. Hargreaves Browne as ac- companist.

Of the various numbers which she contributed, possibly the operatic songs in English were most enjoyed, in which connexion special mention must be made of Butterfly's Arla from "Madame Butterfly," which was very finely sung. Her group of four English songs were also much enjoyed, not the least of these being her husband's "Good" bye, Dear Heart.”

As a keen and talented pianist, Mr. Bowes-Smith is already well known. Last evening he further added to his reputation by the excellence his playing His

A special word should be added regarding the accompaniments for the vocal Items, by Mrs. Har-, greaves Browne, which were most sympathetically played..

The annotated programme, specially prepared for the ocea- [sion, was much appreciated.

Not only was the recital enjoyed by those present; it was also put "on the nir" and so was heard by many not actually present,
