Tho" exchange of cordial greet- inga marked a Chinese New Year tea party at the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, In Con- naught Road Central, yesterday afternoon, when over a hundred prominent Chinese merchants attended.

Among those participating wore Mr. Li Yau-taun, chairman of the Chamber, who presided, the Hon. Dr. R. H. Kotowall, the Hon. Sir Shou-son Chow, the Hon. Dr. S. W. Tao, Mr. Wong Kwong-tin, Mr. Li Jor-ahon, Mr. LI Yick-mul, Mr. Leung Put-yue, Mr. Tang Shiu- kin and Mr. Tang Chi-ngong.

In a short speech the chairman expressed his pleasure in seeing such a large gathering which he anid was indicative of the Improv ing trade conditions in the Colony, adding that he earnestly hoped the merchants in Hongkong will usher In the New Year with optimiam in a prosperous future,

A HUGE TUNNEL.

The death at Macao, on the 9th inst.,

of the late Mr. WHliam Hayes Fogg Cary, late of Canton and latterly with the Green Island Cement Co. Ltd., Macao, will be deeply regretted by his many friends in China.

Mr. Cary was operated upon for appendicitis; compilentions set in and he passed away after serious and painful Blness.

Deep sympathy goes out to Mrs. Cary, whose devotion and tender! nursing did so much to alleviate his sufferings. Mr. Cary first came to Chins as a passenger on a sailing ship in the year 1895, and except for a brief visit to his home in New York, U.S.A. in 1898, he spent the remainder of his time in China.

Mr. Cary was a man of many parts and versatile to a degree is happy presence will be much missed among hia Chinese and European friends.

The Senate has passed the Bill for the settlement of the. Greek debt to the United States, pro- viding for the payment of G$18,125,000 spread over a period
