SHIPBUILDING AT A FASHODA RECALLED.

UNECONOMIC LEVEL OF PRICES.

Representative leaders contri- bute surveys of shipbuilding, ship-|| ping and commerco in 1928 to the annual review of "Lloyd's List and Shipping Gazette."
KITCHENER'S. RIVAL WORK- ING AT MATHEMATICS.
Paris, Jan. 8. "Faahoda? I have forgotten it." Thus General Marchand, who 30 France to the verge of war, repudi- years ago brought England and ated the incident, which has al ready secured him a sure place in history,
Kitchener had just defosted the Dervishes at Athara and Omdur man, and it may be remembered that he showed remarkable tact at his meeting with the French expedi
Mr. J. T. Batey, President of the Shipbuilding Employers' Federation, and that in the end the French Government ordered Marchand to tion, discussing unprofitable ship withdraw from the Upper Nile aren, building, writes:
and so a serious crisis was averted.
"No one with a full knowledge of the circumstances would suggest that the past year has been a good one for the shipbuilding industry, either of this country or of the world. The prices obtainable by shipbuilders at the present time are still on an uneconomic level. The acceptance of prices which do not- even cover standing charges, far less allow for profit, cannot go on Indofinitely. Sooner or later the rule that the fittest survivos must operate."
Dealing with the improvement in the standard of ships, Mr. Batry statos:
"I feel confident in saying that the vessels which are being pro- duced to-day are, more highly efficient than those, turned out at any time in the history of the Bri- tish shipbuilding industry, We have greatly extended our rescarch work, and excellent results are be ing obtained from the scientific in- vestigations made both as regards design and propulsion. Such pro- gress tends to hasten the obnolo- of the older and leas scence economical vessels."

The French hero of this incident was found by a representative of the Petit Parisien living quietly. in the forest of Chantilly, devoting his time to his hobby-mathematics. Ia hopes to solve a problem left open on the death of the famous mathematician, Henri Poincare, the Prime Minister's brother.
General Marchand talked of the war and of his roconciliation with M. Clemenceau, who had once de clarod, "Between us it is war to the knife."
In 1915 the General was badly wounded, and while he was in hospi- tal M. Clemenceau visited him with the words. "Now it is only Franco which matters." A large photo graph of the "Tiger" occupies the placo. of honour in General Mar Chand's study.

ployers' Federation, records that the THE EXPIRING LAMP OF LIFE British shipbuilding Industry_{n} 1928 has been slightly better than at any time during the preceding seven years of acute depression.
The year now closing," he adds, "has been remarkable for its pro- gress in regard to improvementa in
propelling machinery of existing vessels to secure fuel economy and speed, and this progress has brought much valuable work to the marine engineering side of the ship-repair- ing business. The performances of the various vessels which have bad these improvementa Installed are being watched with great interest, not only by British shipbuilders and ship-repairers, but by the ownera, and it is hoped that the success which in being claimed for many of them will bring further much-need- ed work to ship-repairers In 1929." Sir Frederick Henderson wel- comes the rating relief which, un- der the Government scheme, la to be granted to productive industry late in 1929,
"I regret," he proceeds, "that there is a tendency among the political parties to deal with the rating relief problem on the old party lines. I do hope the purely party spirit will be set aside and that all will concentrate and co- operate in so shaping the measure that it will bring the maximum benefit to the depressed areus in which shipbuilding and ship-renuir- ing are situated."
Shipping Economies,
Sir William Seager, President of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom, deals with the shipping trade,
"Shipping freights during the year," he remarks, "have on the whole bech lower month by month than during the corresponding months of 1927.... There ja some hope that the next few months will ahow a continuance of the recent small improvement, as the American harvests have been good, and à good deal of grain will have to be moved to Europe across the Atlantic and to the East across the Pacific.
"For trump shipping to pay its way at freights which are little above the 1913 level, vessels must be efficient and well equipped, and must be worked with the greatest ceonomy, both at aca and in port. Of the effelency of our British vos- sels we may well be proud. Bri- fleh owners, whether of cargo or liner vessels, do not hesitate to adopt the latest designs of hull, machinery, and equipment. Of the 19.7 million gross tons of vessels owned in Great Britain and Ireland on Lloyd's Register in June last, nearly 10 million gross tons, or more than half, represented vessels |less than 10 years old, and only 81⁄2 million gross tona wore 20 years of age or over."
Several contributors criticise the policy of British owners, in dispos- ing of their old vessels to foreign buyers. In many cases, it is point- out, these ships are used in com- petition against British vessels. The mercantile marine of this country, it is maintained, would be In a much more flourishing state' than it is to-day if owners of cargo vessels followed the rule of a few of our liner companies, and refused to sell old tonnage except to ba broken up.
