LOOKS VERY ATTRACTIVE ON

LINEN.

A friend of mine, with big ideas, but n tiny purse, went to see a recent exhibition of wonderful table linens with their patterns all woven in delicate colours on the satin-smooth damask. Bhe came away determined to have some like them, or die in the attempti

As these beautiful cloths were several guineas cach, more, in fact, than she had for a week's housekeeping, to buy them was out of the question. Moreover, her Ilttle store of house linën was most of it the gift of old-fashioned relations who believed in the kind that last a lifetime.

However, difficulties are only spurs to the energetic. Sho simply bought a dozen skeins of pure rien thread, very fino, in pale shades of pink, jade, prim- rose, and forget-me-not, guaran- leed fast in bolling, and carefully darned alf over the patterns with those fine threads. She worked her tiny stitches very carefully the way of the weave, finishing off very neatly without knots or ends, so that the reverse of the cloth was just as attractive.

You have no idea how perfect- ly charming this looks,, how up- fo-date and how expensive! By the outlay of two shillings un threads, her good Thien · Luble- cloths, costing perhaps twenty-; five shillings apiece originally, now look worth the four or five guineas charged for each colour- ed-woven one.

The effect is simply, delightful, although they take somo time to do, neatly, for hurried or irregular large stitches would spell the whole thing.-J. DANE Brchange

Subtlety now permeates the whole world of dress. Nolther our hats nor our clothen hava the air of being built up from pieces of materials by pains- taking stitching and cutting. Especially in this to be noted in the case of the new hats that are closely moulded to the head, yet do not look like "skull" capa. So many varia- tions are introduced that ono never sees two exactly alike, though they all pull well down into the nape of the neck, and are provided with shapely side pieces over one or both cheeks. Different material, a magic little touch in the matter of a curve, a buckle, a jewelled pin, an adroit motif.so placed as to achieve individuality of con- tour; and behold! each little cap in readily distinguished from its neighbour.

Fur Collars.

AND CLOSE LITTLE HATS.

With the high fur winter collars, elosé Hittle hats are quite the right thing. A model simply cut out of felt, and seen recently, has an entertainingly long flap almost covering the right chock, and the other is stiffly draped back upon itself..

Another model is of the toque order, but is elit up over the left eye. And a third has the front part cut right away in a sharp oval in order to show a bare fore- head-for these hats are made to go with bare foreheads only—and sometimes this oval is draped with a little veil which covers the fore- hend.

There is nothing more conveni- ent than the close little hats, and as the Paris milliners have found innumerable ways of varying them to suit every face, they are likely to be with us for quite a while.

Novel Shoes,

A designer who makes some of the smartest shoes in Paris, has a special fondness for a metal lift brass, silver, or copper), or a lift of kid like a piping in a contrast- ing colour to the shoe, in the heel of the shoes, just above the leather urt.

Another charming device for evening is a little Mercury' wing. This is attached the back of the slipper, and is shown in gold and silver kid, on a blonde sutin slipper; in silver on a black satin slipper; and in black satin on a black antelope silppor.

Entire heels of metal are still extremely smart. Brass, silver,

and copper, are used in the even- ing, and sometimes gun-metal heels appear in conjunction with black satin slippers.

TWO GORGEOUS NEW SHADES.

There are two gorgeous new shades in evening stockings. The one is a rich crushed strawberry, and the other is the same shade in a lighter tone. They are both rich for wear, with, almost any kind of evening shoes, and certain- ly with most types of frocks and gowns. Another pretty shade is true apricot, which embodies all the rich yellow and pink tones of the fruit.
